After playing until we were exhausted, we sat side by side on the beach to rest, and before we knew it, the sun had begun to set. Gazing at the tangerine-hued sky reminiscent of Jeju’s oranges, memories of the past naturally surfaced.

The day I first summoned courage to speak to him first.

That hill, that sunset.

“Was it me, or the painting?”

It was a question he’d asked many times during their youth, when they were deeply in love.

He had always been desperately curious whether it was him she’d fallen for first, or his artwork.

Yet Hee Sun had never managed to give him a proper answer—not because she wouldn’t, but because she truly didn’t know herself.

In truth, for Hee Sun, the two had always been one and the same. She couldn’t separate the man from his paintings.

The first time she’d seen a man so absorbed in capturing an ordinary, unremarkable landscape—one she’d seen every day since childhood—onto his canvas, she’d thought,

There truly are people in this world as beautiful as that.

And when she saw the paintings he created, she’d thought again,

There truly are landscapes in this world as breathtaking as this.
