President Kennedy looked straight into the camera and spoke solemnly.

“—not in middle school, but when he was in the second grade of elementary school.”

Even the journalists were so stunned that they momentarily stopped typing on their keyboards.

“I lived like a fool, unaware that I even had a son. At the time, my son was separated from his birth mother due to unavoidable circumstances and was being raised by complete strangers. When I first met her, she was a young woman who had just graduated from college—and even then, she wore worn-out, old sneakers, during what should have been the most beautiful and radiant years of her life.”

President Kennedy referred to his son as “my son” and to the fiancée as “that girl.” The affection in both terms carried equal weight.

“It was she who taught my son his ABCs and his Korean alphabet. Without her, my son would never have become the successful man he is today. People who saw the reports have been saying, ‘How heartbroken his parents must be right now.’ Yes, we are deeply distressed. Tae Ha’s mother is crying, saying she has no face to meet the girl who will become her daughter-in-law. I feel exactly the same way—which is why I’ve gathered you all here today to speak directly.”

After taking a brief pause to catch his breath, President Kennedy continued.

“I would also like to clarify the rumors claiming they started dating in middle school. When I first met my son, I urged him to come with me to America. But he refused outright, saying he couldn’t leave because she was still in Korea. It was already clear then how deeply he loved her—but to me, that was only natural.
