The Young Boss (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 4
Si Hyeon was waiting for Tae Ha in the underground parking lot, wondering if he’d come down now or later.
“Why isn’t he coming down? This kid.”
Crouching behind the car, hiding like this, her legs ached so much she felt like dying. She wanted to stand up and stretch them out, but Si Hyeon endured it firmly. If someone happened to spot her, they’d surely label her a pervert.
She couldn’t even describe how tense she’d been on her way down to the underground parking lot via the stairs after changing clothes in the restroom, terrified someone might see her.
Si Hyeon was wearing her old high school uniform. She’d kept it all this time just for the nostalgia. She’d deliberately removed her makeup, tied her hair back, and even put on a backpack.
When she first met Tae Ha, she’d been a first-year high school student. Essentially, she’d dressed exactly as she had back then.
Since the underground parking lot was so dimly lit, maybe she looked vaguely like she did back then?
After lying in wait patiently for about thirty minutes, she finally saw Tae Ha approaching from a distance. Si Hyeon swallowed hard.
As Tae Ha reached for his car door, Si Hyeon called out to him from behind.
“Tae Ha!”
Tae Ha’s eyes widened at the sight of Si Hyeon. He stared at her intently, as if unable to believe his eyes.
“Do you recognize me? Huh?”
After staring at Si Hyeon for a long while, Tae Ha suddenly strode forward and pulled her tightly into his arms.
“Tae Ha?”
Startled, Si Hyeon buried her face in Tae Ha’s chest as he turned his body slightly, hiding her as if to shield her, and whispered in a low voice.
“Shh. Someone’s coming.”
Alarmed, Si Hyeon instantly buried her face deeper into Tae Ha’s chest like a quail hiding its head in bushes. If someone saw them, she’d never be able to show her face at the office again!
“……”
After holding her breath for a long while in Tae Ha’s embrace, Si Hyeon suddenly thought to herself.
‘But since when did this kid get such a broad chest?’
It was broad, firm, and warm—so much so she couldn’t believe this was the boy she’d raised.
Thump, thump, thump. She could hear his heartbeat racing wildly against her ear, as if about to burst. It didn’t seem like the kind of heart-racing reaction she’d have toward just any odd subordinate.
Si Hyeon was certain he’d finally recognized her. Of course—you couldn’t possibly fail to recognize me forever. Tears welled up in her eyes.
But a moment later, an amused expression appeared on the man’s face as he released the hug.
“It’s certainly original.”
Looking at Si Hyeon in her school uniform, Tae Ha shook his head lightly.
“Sorry about this, but that’s just not my type.”
“Tae Ha!”
But Tae Ha had already turned away as if his business was finished.
“See you at the dinner party later, then.”
Welcome dinner for Department Head Yoon Tae Ha.
While people usually envied those who worked at major banks, the truth was that Mirae Bank’s benefits weren’t anything to boast about. Even their dinner parties always defaulted to pork belly.
But tonight’s dinner menu was premium Korean beef—unsurprisingly paid for out of the department head’s own pocket. In fact, the new department head even declared this right after everyone had taken their seats.
“Please feel free to order anything you’d like—don’t hold back.”
Thanks to this, the dinner started off in high spirits.
“Umm, Department Head… is it true that you’re the CEO of Union TA?”
At the question from a bold team member, the department head coolly nodded.
“That’s correct.”
Even those who’d remained skeptical until then erupted into chatter at his direct confirmation.
“You’re so cool, Department Head!”
“If it were me, I’d have quit my job already and be sipping mojitos in the Maldives.”
After all sorts of lighthearted banter, the question everyone had been most curious about finally came up.
“But Department Head, why did you really join our company? Your own company must keep you plenty busy.”
Tae Ha silently lifted his glass and emptied it. His unspoken refusal to answer made everyone tense up and hold their breath.
Though young in age, he was undeniably the highest-ranking person at this gathering.
Normally, having such a young superior might incite resentment with comments like “just a kid,” yet no one in the WonApp team showed any sign of that. Partly due to his impressive credentials, but mostly because of his inherent demeanor.
Tae Ha always carried himself like an adult—reserved in speech and composed in manner—so much so that even his own father and school teachers found him difficult to approach. The only person who could treat him casually was Si Hyeon.
True to form, when Tae Ha evaded answering again, no one dared ask him a second time. Instead, the ever-convivial senior associate Kim quickly picked up the bottle and refilled Tae Ha’s empty glass.
“Have another drink, hyung.”
Senior Associate Kim was Si Hyeon’s same-year hire and was thirty-five this year.

“Why, when you’ve got money, you’re automatically hyung, right? Hahaha.”
Though his tactless joke earned him exasperated glances of “You crazy fool!” from those around, surprisingly, Department Head Yoon Tae Ha himself didn’t seem annoyed at all.
“That’s an amusing way to put it.”
This softened the momentarily tense atmosphere. Seizing the moment, Mi Ju chimed in from beside him.
“There’s also the saying, ‘If he’s handsome, you call him oppa.’”
“That one appeals to me even more.”
Tae Ha even gave Mi Ju a faint smile. For reference, Mi Ju was the same age as Si Hyeon.
The team members were overjoyed—never expecting their aloof, almost alien-like young department head to respond so warmly to such a silly joke.
“You’re absolutely awesome, Department Head!”
“Thank you.”
Si Hyeon quietly seethed in the corner. How dare he always give me that sour look, yet smile so nicely at everyone else!
Furious, Si Hyeon downed her shot of soju in one gulp.
“Hey, since the department head’s here today, take it easy, Associate Manager Kang. Don’t go looking for your ex again when you get drunk.”
The team leader teased her playfully.
Si Hyeon forced a stiff smile.
“No, Team Leader, what are you talking about…?”
“Whenever you drink, you start crying to anyone, saying, ‘Tae Ha, where have you been? Why are you only showing up now?’”
“Oh, now that you mention it, isn’t your ex’s name the same as the department head’s?”
Her colleagues giggled mischievously.
Si Hyeon’s face flushed hotly. It felt both humiliating and infuriating that she’d been pining so desperately all this time while Tae Ha didn’t even remember her.
It felt worse because he sat there looking utterly indifferent.
“Associate Manager Kang, are you staying single all this time because of your ex?”
“I think there’s been a misunderstanding.”
Si Hyeon swept her hair behind her ears and deliberately put on an elegant expression.
“I’m getting married soon. Next week, I’m formally meeting my boyfriend’s parents.”
A chorus of “Wow!” filled the restaurant.
“Oh really? So Kang Si Hyeon is finally getting married?”
The team leader, who’d often clicked his tongue and muttered, “Good grief, who’d ever take that girl?” asked in disbelief. He’d been on the same development team with Si Hyeon long before the WonApp team was formed.
She knew he meant it affectionately since he’d always looked out for her, but hearing those words still stung just enough to make her stubbornly determined: “I’ll get married just to prove him wrong!”
“Oh my, congratulations, Associate Manager Kang!”
“When’s the wedding?”
As attention poured onto Si Hyeon from all sides, Tae Ha at the head table remained silent, his lips tightly pressed.
“Didn’t Associate Manager Kang say her boyfriend works at a public corporation?”
“Wow, that’s a top-tier match right there.”
“Goodness, the old maid’s finally getting married! Here, have another drink!”
Everyone eagerly poured celebratory drinks for Si Hyeon. Mi Ju asked with a bright smile.
“You’ll attend Kang Si Hyeon’s wedding, won’t you, Department Head?”
Tae Ha responded coldly.
“Why on earth would I go there?”
The room instantly fell silent as if doused with cold water. Mi Ju, who’d spoken, turned bright red.
“I’m sorry. You’re busy, Department Head—I shouldn’t have said that…”
Si Hyeon clenched her fists under the table. She felt even more embarrassed than Mi Ju herself.
Fine, I get that you don’t remember me. But did you really have to say that in front of everyone?
The thought that Tae Ha wouldn’t attend her wedding left her feeling hollow. What did it matter if a hundred or even a thousand friends and colleagues came? None of it meant anything if the one person who felt like family to her wasn’t there.
Trying to salvage the suddenly icy mood, the team leader deliberately raised his voice cheerfully.
“Alright, alright! Department Head, how about we all do a toast together?”
“Since we’re the WonApp team, let’s do a ‘Won Shot’!”
Setting his glass down firmly, Tae Ha raised his voice for the toast.
“Then, cheers! To the success of the WonApp project.”
“To success!”

Thanks to this, the mood quickly recovered, but Si Hyeon’s spirits didn’t lift. Only someone who’d experienced it could understand how it felt to be dismissed face-to-face by the child you’d raised yourself.
She suddenly realized something.
Of course you forgot me. To you, those are memories you’d rather forget. Now that you’ve succeeded, you probably want to erase every trace of that poor, pitiful past.
And here I was, clueless, trying to jog your memory by packing kimbap and shamelessly digging out my old school uniform…!
Her eyes stung with heat, so she bit her lip and kept drinking. By the time the dinner ended, she was completely drunk and could barely control her own body.
“Are you okay, Si Hyeon?”
“I’m – totally fine. Don’t you worry one bit.”
“Come here. I’ll call you a taxi.”
Si Hyeon shook off Mi Ju’s supporting hand.
“I’m fine. My oppa’s coming to pick me up.”
She staggered away, calling Woo Jin on the way, but of course, no matter how many times she dialed, he didn’t answer.
“Right. Why would our busy Kim Woo Jin ever pick up so willingly?”
Chuckling to herself, Si Hyeon plopped down onto a bench at the bus stop. She tried hard to sit upright, but her body kept tilting sideways.
Just as she was about to topple straight onto the ground, someone firmly grabbed her arm. Startled, she looked up—and saw Tae Ha standing there.
“Tae Ha!”
She clung to his neck desperately, like someone drowning in water. A slightly annoyed voice came back.
“Aren’t you supposed to act more responsibly when you’re getting married soon?”
But Si Hyeon didn’t even hear him. Gripping his collar, she looked up at his face imploringly, trying desperately to catch his eyes.
“Do you really not know who I am? Huh? Can’t you recognize me at all?”
Yet Tae Ha’s gaze remained cold. Finally, Si Hyeon buried her face in his chest and burst into heartbroken tears, pounding his chest with her fists again and again.
“How could you forget me? How could you possibly do this…?!”
After a moment, a deep sigh sounded from above her head.
“……If you keep this up, I won’t be able to let go.”
Strong arms pulled her tightly against him.
She didn’t understand what he meant. She didn’t even care to. In that moment, all that mattered was that Tae Ha was holding her—and that made her happy.
Leaning into his warm embrace, Si Hyeon cried endlessly—until, at some point, her consciousness faded away.
Si Hyeon opened her eyes to a splitting headache. The first thing she saw was a man’s bare shoulder, turned toward her under the same blanket.
Since when had Oppa Woo Jin’s shoulders gotten so broad? Puzzled, Si Hyeon opened her mouth.
“Oppa, when did you come to pick me up…?”
The moment the man turned toward her with a low “Hm…”,
Si Hyeon clamped her hand over her mouth, swallowing her scream.
“……!”
The sleeping man was none other than Tae Ha.
After freezing in place for a long while, Si Hyeon finally gathered her wits and frantically looked around. It appeared to be a hotel room—and she was only in her underwear.
She didn’t know what had happened, but escape was urgent. Si Hyeon quietly got up and quickly gathered her clothes.
But before she could even finish buttoning her blouse, she felt gentle arms wrap around her from behind.
“If you were awake, why didn’t you wake me?”
The moment his warm breath brushed her ear, Si Hyeon froze solid.
“Or… would you like to go again?”
