In the dim light, Hee Sun opened her eyes. The unfamiliar surroundings took her a moment to recognize where she was lying.

‘Ah, right—I was moved to the hotel.’

Hee Sun sat up. Her body, accustomed to sleeping on a thin mat on the floor for so long, felt stiff in her lower back after waking up on the soft bed.

Stepping into the living room, she saw Tae Ha curled up asleep on the sofa. She wondered why he’d chosen the sofa over the perfectly good bed, until she noticed Si Hyeon’s handbag and outerwear placed neatly on the table.

‘So Si Hyeon came over.’

Watching the couple, a gentle smile touched Hee Sun’s lips.

Since they’d be married soon anyway, sharing a room wouldn’t raise eyebrows. But with his mother in the next room, they were being proper and sleeping separately.

‘My lovely children.’

She picked up the blanket that had fallen to the floor and quietly draped it over the sleeping Tae Ha, then headed softly toward the bedroom across the hall.

Truthfully, she’d heard Tae Ha worry the past few days that Si Hyeon seemed unusually low-spirited. She wanted to talk to Si Hyeon alone and see if something was troubling her.

“Si Hyeon, are you still asleep?”

As she was about to call out and knock gently, Si Hyeon’s voice came from inside.

“The money’s ready.”

So she’d been awake. Hee Sun quickly stopped reaching for the door. Si Hyeon seemed to be on a call, and Hee Sun was about to turn away—but something in the words felt deeply unsettling.

“No, the transfer can wait. First, you’ll need to sign a written statement under a lawyer’s supervision. I can’t let the same thing happen to me twice.”
