“Don’t get married.”

Avoiding her injured hand, he firmly grasped her wrist and peered closely into Si Hyeon’s eyes.

“Listen to me. Don’t do it—that marriage.”

Si Hyeon was so shocked she remained speechless for a long while.

“Do you think marriage is some child’s game? Cancel it over something so trivial.”

She was clearly angry and hurt by today’s incident. The thought of how she would manage with a mother-in-law like this in the future made her vision go dark. Still, she hadn’t the slightest intention of calling off the wedding.

“Do you love that man?”

Si Hyeon answered without hesitation.

“I’m marrying him because I love him, of course.”

They had been together for six years. Although the initial excitement from when they first started dating had nearly vanished, Si Hyeon believed the loyalty and comfort built over time were also forms of love.

But Tae Ha bluntly shot back.

“Do you really like a man who lets you ruin your hands like that on your birthday?”

“My mother-in-law did that. You were in your room, so you didn’t see.”

It was half a lie. Woo Jin hadn’t seen Si Hyeon handling chili powder with bare hands, but he had clearly seen her afterward, helplessly suffering from the pain—and said nothing.

Tae Ha’s expression grew even angrier.

“So it’s fine with you that your future mother-in-law treats you like a servant even before the wedding?”

“All in-laws are like that. Where do you find a daughter-in-law treated like a real daughter? All the other sisters-in-law do the same—what’s so strange about it?”

But Tae Ha snapped back, as if spitting out the words.

“Stop talking nonsense and call it off now, before things get even worse.”

A sudden wave of hurt washed over her. Ever since serious wedding plans began, Tae Ha had been on her mind more and more.

The thought of Tae Ha not being at her wedding made her unbearably empty. She’d even considered hiring a private investigator to find him.

She’d thought Tae Ha would be the one to congratulate her more than anyone—but now that he’d regained his memories, his only words were telling her not to marry.

“Are you really the one to say that? Even if you can’t congratulate me!”

“So you want me to just stand by and watch you marry that worthless bastard?”

“Yoon Tae Ha!”

Furious, Si Hyeon raised her voice.

“He’ll be your brother-in-law! How can you talk like that?”

Tae Ha’s voice rose in turn. Frustrated, he ran his hands through his hair and pressed sharply.

“That man can’t protect you. Can’t you even see you’re being hurt?”

“I told you—you didn’t see!”

“How could he not see with your hands in such a state!”

Si Hyeon resented Tae Ha for refusing to understand her position. He was young, handsome, and had everything—of course he could marry whomever he wanted, whenever he pleased. But why couldn’t he understand that she wasn’t in the same situation?

“I’m already thirty-three. After six years together, what am I supposed to do if I call off the wedding now? What if I end up never getting married at all…?”

Tae Ha cut her off.

“I’ll take responsibility.”

He stepped closer toward the startled Si Hyeon.

“I’ll take responsibility, so don’t go through with that marriage.”

His intense, direct gaze stole her breath. When she instinctively took a step back, Tae Ha closed the distance immediately, as if refusing to let even a little space form between them.

Trying to retreat further, Si Hyeon bumped against the wall. Blocking her path, Tae Ha silently looked down at her.

“…”

They were so close she could feel his breath.

Unable to meet his eyes, she looked away—until Tae Ha whispered softly.

“Look at me.”

Hearing that almost pleading tone, Si Hyeon slowly raised her head.

This was no longer a boy’s gaze, but a man’s.

In that instant, she felt a fierce sense of rejection. You shouldn’t look at me like that. Any other man in the world might—but not you! You remembered everything, so why do you still stare at me like this!

“It’s too late. I should go now.”

She gritted her teeth as she spoke.

“I’ll pretend I never heard what you just said.”

“Phew…”

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

After Si Hyeon left the office, Tae Ha, now alone, leaned against the wall and let out a long sigh.

[Do you love that man?]

She would never know how much courage it had taken him just to ask that question.

Of course she could answer without a moment’s hesitation.

[I’m marrying him because I love him, of course.]

She was a cruel woman. As always.

But that didn’t mean he’d even consider giving up.

Today, Tae Ha finally understood with certainty: Kang Si Hyeon’s man couldn’t protect her. In fact, he was making her unhappy.

Letting her cry alone like that on her birthday…!

Remembering Si Hyeon’s bright red, swollen hands, his fists clenched involuntarily. Rage surged toward the man who, despite possessing what Tae Ha had longed for so desperately, clearly didn’t value it at all.

If it were me, I’d rather die than make you cry!

After standing motionless for a long while, Tae Ha left the office. By the time he walked out, his resolve was already firm.

Even if Kang Si Hyeon loved that man, he wouldn’t let her go—not anymore.

The next morning, Si Hyeon’s steps toward the office felt heavier than usual. Perhaps because so much had happened yesterday, she already felt exhausted even before reaching work.

Truthfully, the biggest event had obviously been meeting Woo Jin’s parents. Yet what lingered in her mind was Tae Ha.

She’d had countless things she’d wanted to say once Tae Ha regained his memories—how she’d been, how his father was doing, why he’d completely disappeared for so long.

But instead, the moment his memories returned, they’d ended up in a huge fight.

“…”

Si Hyeon sighed deeply, as if the ground might swallow her.

Fine, she understood—he probably felt like a younger brother protective of his older sister’s boyfriend. But telling her to cancel the wedding and even calling Woo Jin, whom he’d never even met, trash was clearly crossing a line.

And that look in his eyes…

[I’ll take responsibility, so don’t go through with that marriage.]

What on earth had he been thinking when he said that to her?

The Tae Ha she thought she understood better than anyone else in the world now felt like a stranger. What could possibly have happened to him over these six years?

As she sighed and entered the office, Mi Ju asked her.

“Si Hyeon, did you manage okay with the overtime last night? Is everything ready for the meeting?”

“Eh, more or less.”

In truth, she’d been too busy arguing with Tae Ha to even touch her work. She’d tried reviewing things back home, but couldn’t concentrate at all and eventually gave up.

“Oh, by the way—thanks for the cake, Mi Ju.”

“Huh? What cake?”

Mi Ju’s puzzled reply made Si Hyeon flustered. She’d assumed Mi Ju had sent it—but if not her, then who…?

Shortly afterward, the meeting began. All team members gathered in the conference room, and Tae Ha walked in.

“I’ve reviewed our progress so far.”

The team members all turned to the department head with the same anxious expressions as college students facing a professor’s evaluation.

“Before discussing features or design, there’s a serious problem with our entire direction.”

The professor had just handed out an automatic F.

“It seems you’re all under some misconception. This isn’t just about combining existing app features. We need to boldly cut what isn’t essential, simplify thoroughly, and then build new services on top.”

As he demonstrated the prototype under development, the department head pointed out each flaw.

“For example, the consultation feature—why is it embedded separately in every detailed menu? Why must small business loans appear on the very first screen? And how many people would actually use a health management feature inside the insurance section?”

He looked around at the team members.

“This means our fundamental UX design is flawed. The UX planner must draft a detailed removal plan by the end of this week and submit it.”

Si Hyeon felt her face burning hot. It was clearly directed at her, the team’s only UX designer.

Defending the criticized Si Hyeon, the team leader spoke up.

“Um, department head… A week might be too tight.”

He spoke as carefully as possible.

“Removing features isn’t something our team can decide alone. Since it involves coordination with each business division, we’d need to consult with them one by one…”

“I’ll handle the consultations.”

Cutting off the team leader, Tae Ha looked around at the team members.

“So all you need to consider is this: from the user’s perspective, is this feature truly necessary or not? If you genuinely think it’s unnecessary, cut it without hesitation and bring me the revised plan.”

Si Hyeon thought this was recklessly unrealistic. Of course, Tae Ha was an outstanding planner and developer—but what did he know about banking operations?

She tried her best to explain properly.

“Department head, Mirae Bank isn’t like a fintech startup or internet-only bank. Our service scope is much broader, and we’re involved in numerous government-sponsored projects—so we simply can’t cut that drastically…”

“Or is it that you just don’t want to cut?”

Tae Ha stared intently at Si Hyeon.

“Ask yourself seriously once: are you mistaking something you can’t bring yourself to discard for something you truly can’t afford to lose?”

Si Hyeon realized—this wasn’t directed at Kang Si Hyeon the UX designer, but at Kang Si Hyeon the person.

After watching her flustered silence for a while, Tae Ha finally turned his head away.

“We’ll reconvene the meeting in one week.”

After scolding Si Hyeon thoroughly during the morning meeting, Tae Ha spent the whole day restless. He shouldn’t have spoken so harshly right in front of everyone.

Remembering Si Hyeon’s bright red, embarrassed face made his insides burn with belated regret.

‘What if she starts avoiding me altogether now?’

Tae Ha now deeply understood the saying: the one who likes more is always at a disadvantage.

Unable to bear it any longer, that evening he followed Si Hyeon as she left work.

“Wait a moment.”

He called out to her as she headed toward the bus stop in front of the office. Si Hyeon turned around.

“What is it?”

Even though no one else was around, she used formal speech. Clearly, she was deeply hurt. Tae Ha felt as if everything went dark before his eyes.

“Um, about this morning…”

I went too far. As he hesitated, trying to apologize, another voice cut him off.

“Si Hyeon!”

Tae Ha jumped in surprise and turned around. A man in a suit, resembling an office worker, beamed brightly and waved enthusiastically from a distance.

“Oppa Woo Jin?”

Si Hyeon murmured in surprise upon seeing the man.

So that’s the guy…! Tae Ha’s eyes instinctively hardened.

“Are you done for the day?”

The man approached and gently placed his hand on Si Hyeon’s shoulder—then suddenly froze as his eyes met Tae Ha’s.

“Who’s that?”
