The brown eyes, now utterly devoid of mirth, gazed intently into hers from close range.

“But except for my Rose, no one else ever caught my eye.”

He pulled her even closer, as if to confirm Hee Sun was truly in his arms, and murmured softly,

“I somehow felt you hadn’t really died. Logically, I knew you were gone—I’d even chased you all the way to Korea, seen the death certificate with my own eyes, and found out exactly where your ashes had been scattered… Yet deep inside, I kept believing you were still alive. My mind accepted it, but my heart refused. So I couldn’t bring myself to get close to anyone else.”

Hearing this, Hee Sun suddenly remembered something.

“But you did get married once, didn’t you?”

“Yes, I did.”

His blunt admission weighed heavily on her chest. Hearing it directly from him was worlds apart from what she’d heard secondhand.

“To her… I did so many wrongs.”

Leon’s expression turned bitter.

“My parents wanted me to marry her from the very beginning—the two families were deeply entangled in business. Anyway, since I’d never intended to love anyone but you for the rest of my life, I figured I might as well fulfill my parents’ wish… Only later did I realize she’d truly cared for me.”

Just hearing another woman’s story from his lips made Hee Sun feel as if her heart were being pierced. She regretted asking.

“Then you should’ve just loved her.”

“Perhaps I could have, if ours had been a normal marriage. She was a good person. But instead of love, I kept growing to resent her. If only it hadn’t been her, maybe my parents would have accepted Rose. If only I’d brought you to America sooner, you’d never have died in that car accident.”
