“You look truly beautiful today, our Si-hyun. Dazzlingly beautiful.”
Even though he spoke perfect Korean, the expressions embedded within were straightforward, much like a foreigner.
Looking directly into her eyes and hearing such words, Si-hyun’s face flushed, and unintentionally, she avoided eye contact. ‘Ah, this is why Tae-ha misunderstood back then, thinking I liked the uncle.’
In fact, Tae-ha wasn’t the type to make such remarks. He never spoke them because his gaze, always filled with fascination, didn’t require verbal expression.
Hearing words she wasn’t accustomed to, Si-hyun, feeling shy, inadvertently betrayed her embarrassment.
“Haven’t you wanted to see me, sir? You didn’t even call once during the few years.”
While contact with Tae-ha was cut off, there was no contact from Leon either. They couldn’t initiate contact since they didn’t have each other’s phone numbers.
“Of course, I wanted to see you. I don’t know how much I wanted to contact you every time I came to Korea.”
Leon sighed.
“But knowing that Tae-ha is having a hard time because he wants to see you, I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.”
In the end, it was all because of him. While separated, Si-hyun thought about how difficult Tae-ha must have been, and she suddenly felt that the man in front of her had become a stranger as Tae-ha’s father.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“I’m much older than Tae-ha and have nothing, yet I caused you so much emotional turmoil…”
Unable to look at each other, Si-hyun fiddled with the napkin in her hand. Leon gently took Si-hyun’s hand as she nervously fidgeted.
“I never imagined anyone other than Si-hyun as Tae-ha’s partner.”
“Sir…”
“It’s not because Si-hyun raised Tae-ha. It’s because Tae-ha loves Si-hyun so much.”
Holding Si-hyun’s hand, Leon sincerely expressed his gratitude.
“Tae-ha opening his heart to me is all thanks to Si-hyun.”
“I haven’t done anything.”
“You couldn’t see how Tae-ha lived during that time, so you wouldn’t know.”
Seeing Si-hyun flustered, Leon smiled.
“Sort of like a living being, or should I say more like a machine? It seemed as if they were merely clinging to work, devoid of any emotions. So, there was no room for me to intervene. Even when I went all the way to Korea to see Tae-ha, it was just awkwardly having a meal once and parting ways.”
“…….”
“But after meeting Si-hyun again, something changed in Tae-ha. There were times when he was gloomy or angry, but it was clear that he started to feel emotions. Then, he started calling me ‘father’ for the first time, and out of the blue, he suggested having a drink together… Who do you think is responsible for all of that?”
With the same affectionate gaze as when looking at Tae-ha, Leon looked at Si-hyun.
“I don’t want to see him like that again. So, please, Si-hyun, stay by Tae-ha’s side forever.”
That was the only thing he was confident about. Holding Leon’s hand carefully, Si-hyun nodded firmly.
“I will.”
“Good. Shall we stop holding hands and eat now?”
Leon grinned and gestured toward the waiter with a sly look.
“Oh my!”
Surprised, Si-hyun quickly let go of Leon’s hand.
The formal dinner began. Leon paid more attention to Si-hyun’s eating, as if he was living and dying by it. Despite seeming completely different in temperament, Si-hyun thought he resembled a wealthy person in this regard.
“But what did you want to say?”
“Hmm?”
“Why did you ask to see me, saying you had something to talk about?”
In fact, she had noticed from the beginning. It was probably not just an excuse for a date; there must be something he wanted to say in a place where Tae-ha wasn’t present.
As expected, it seemed to be the right answer. Leon hesitated before asking.
“You know. That day, did I say anything strange because I was too drunk?”
Si-hyun nodded.
“You seemed to be desperately looking for someone.”
Leon’s face tensed.
“Did Tae-ha hear it too?”
“Yes. But I didn’t understand exactly what you were talking about. You just asked where someone was and said you’d wait, that’s all.”
“Then Tae-ha doesn’t know who we were looking for?”
“No.”
After receiving a definite answer, Leon let out a relieved sigh.
“Should Tae-ha not know who we were looking for?”
Leon nodded.
“I don’t want to give him false hope and then disappoint him. If we find that person, I’ll definitely let him meet them first, but it seems increasingly unlikely. I really thought we could find them this time…”
“Who is it?”
Leon hesitated for a long time before finally opening his mouth.
“Tae-ha, don’t tell him for a while. Actually…”
He stopped there.
“I suspected it but, was it really Kang Si-hyun?”
Someone’s voice abruptly interrupted, causing Si-hyun to be surprised and look up. Bora was standing there, looking down at Si-hyun with a smirk, her lips curled on one side.
“Is that you, Bora?”
Si-hyun was astonished.
[Excuse me for a moment. She’s a friend of Kang Si-hyun.]Leon smiled politely towards her in English and Bora, with the same smiling expression, blurted out in English.
“Tae-ha knows, right? That you’re straddling two worlds.”
Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away
This is also on my reread list!
This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.
Definitely worth a read, y’all!
The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.
But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.
Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.
I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.
The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.
As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
