After work, Si Hyun boarded the bus. Instead of getting off in front of her house as usual, she rode all the way to the turnaround point.
Si Hyun took out her phone and headed towards a nearby movie theater. Though the place was fairly crowded, finding Tae Ha was not difficult. She simply followed where the gazes of women were fixed, and there he was.
Though he was still in his work suit, the atmosphere around him felt different just by him standing there.
His imposing stature and beautiful face. Even his slightly anxious expression seemed like a scene out of a movie. She knew he was waiting for her, but she wanted to admire him a little longer.
Si Hyun did not approach him but observed Tae Ha from a distance. Soon enough, her eyes met those of a man who was glancing around.
For a moment, his anxious face lit up as if a flower had bloomed.
“Did you just get here?”
He quickly came over and grabbed Si Hyun’s hand, letting out a sigh of relief.
“I was worried you weren’t going to come.”
Understanding his concern for her lateness, Si Hyun tightly gripped his hand back.
“I was late because I took the bus. I’m sorry.”
It was the day they had decided to watch a movie for their first date. They had come far away from the office to avoid prying eyes.
In fact, this wasn’t the first time they watched a movie together.
“Do you remember the last movie we watched together?”
When Si Hyun asked with a chuckle, Tae Ha replied,
“I watched Avengers in my second year of high school.”
“Right. What about the first movie we watched?”
“In third grade on Children’s Day. A Disney animation.”
It felt strange to be holding hands with that child, now grown up.
The movie was a Hollywood blockbuster, currently topping the box office. Throughout the movie, Tae Ha tightly held Si Hyun’s hand. Even when she tried to let go because her hand was sweaty, he quickly grabbed it again.
Because of this, Si Hyun couldn’t focus on the movie at all.
It was the end of May, and the days were getting longer. Even after the movie had ended and they stepped outside, it was still bright.
Suddenly, Si Hyun saw a clover-shaped necklace around the neck of a woman who was leaving the theater arm in arm with her boyfriend. Her heart sank for a moment.
She had already seen another woman wearing the same necklace earlier. Though her feelings for Woo Jin had been sorted out, seeing it still made her feel down.
She wondered if she’d feel like this every time she saw that necklace. With a silent sigh, Si Hyun looked away.
“What do you want to eat?”
At Tae Ha’s question, Si Hyun hesitated before answering.
“Tteokbokki.”
Tae Ha had once angrily thrown away tteokbokki that Woo Jin had bought for her.
[There are better things to eat than something like tteokbokki.]And today was their first date. She thought he would scold her for wanting tteokbokki, but Tae Ha simply nodded.
“Let’s go eat.”
“Why aren’t you questioning my choice for tteokbokki?”
“People can be guilty, but tteokbokki isn’t.”
Si Hyun burst into laughter.
They had dinner at a buffet-style instant tteokbokki place. Tae Ha piled up his plate with cabbage, boiled eggs, and fried dumplings. All things that Si Hyun liked.
“This.”
As they were finishing their tteokbokki, Si Hyun handed Tae Ha a prepared envelope.
“What is this?”
“Your 30 million won. I finally got the deposit back for our newlywed home. Sorry it’s late.”
Tae Ha sighed.
“I told you that you didn’t have to pay me back.”
“Still, we need to settle things properly.”
“If we’re talking about settling things, everything I have should go to you and it still wouldn’t be enough.”
After some back-and-forth about taking it or not, Tae Ha suddenly closed his mouth. After a moment’s thought, he asked,
“Did you get all of the deposit back?”
“Yes. 300 million won in total, and since I paid half, it’s 150 million back.”
“So you have 150 million won right now?”
Si Hyun answered without knowing why.
“Yes, I received it as a check.”
Tae Ha abruptly spoke.
“Give that to me.”
“Huh?”
Si Hyun looked slightly flustered.
“You’re not going to use it right away, so give it to me.”
For some reason, Tae Ha was unusually insistent.
He’s a man with money, so why is he doing this all of a sudden? But Si Hyun quickly changed her thoughts. There must be some reason.
He’s a businessman; perhaps he suddenly found himself short of cash, or maybe he’s investing in stocks or something.
Either way, if Tae Ha was asking for it, she wanted to give it to him. Si Hyun thought it didn’t matter what the reason was.
Si Hyun obediently took the remaining checks from her bag, put them in an envelope, and offered them.
“Here.”
Even though he was the one who asked for it first, Tae Ha hesitated as he took the envelope.
“Is it okay to just give this away? This is all you have, isn’t it?”
Si Hyun smiled.
“Sorry this is all I have. If I had more, I would’ve given that too.”
Tae Ha quietly smiled back.
After the meal, they walked slowly, hand in hand, talking in a small park nearby.
“You moved next door because of me, didn’t you?”
