Yeon Joo stepped out of the car and gazed at the scene before her. She saw the familiar gate and, beyond it, the brick-colored single-family house.

“Please clock out here. I’ll find my own way back later.”

After saying this to the driver who had given her a ride, Yeon Joo walked toward the house in front of her. She stopped in front of the sturdy-looking iron gate. Suddenly, she remembered the first time she’d stood before this gate.

“Yeon Joo, this is the house where you’ll live from now on—with Mommy and this mister.”

Mi Hyun had said those words gently, holding little Yeon Joo’s hand.

“He’ll be your new daddy now.”

To her young eyes, this house had looked magnificent and grand—as if straight out of a fairy tale.

She’d believed that living here would mean endless fairy-tale days. With a new family, she thought she’d never be lonely again and would always be surrounded by laughter.

But contrary to her expectations, she hadn’t laughed freely even once since moving into this house.

She’d always had to tiptoe around Kyeong Ok and Dae Han, struggling desperately just to avoid becoming useless in their eyes.

And after Mi Hyun’s accident left her bedridden, this place became worse than hell. Almost daily, Kyeong Ok scolded her, and sometimes even resorted to physical abuse.

Dae Han turned a blind eye to Yeon Joo’s suffering and, just days after Mi Hyun’s accident, began seeing another woman.

Powerless, Yeon Joo could do nothing. She endured the humiliation and pain, believing everything would be resolved if only Mi Hyun could wake up.

There had even been a time in the dead of winter when Kyeong Ok kicked her out without reason, leaving her wandering in front of the gate. Remembering herself at eighteen, crouched by that gate, Yeon Joo’s eyes darkened.

She took a long, deep breath and pressed the doorbell. The gate opened immediately—apparently, someone had recognized her face on the intercom screen.
