I flopped back onto the bed again. They say humans are creatures of adaptation—now, even this plush bed felt perfectly natural.

But if I were to lie down on a military camp bed again, I’d probably grow accustomed to that too, simply because I’d spent so long sleeping on one.

Lying in bed, I chattered away while gazing at the ceiling fresco.

“In wartime, everyone talks about what they’ll do once they return home. And yet, at the same time, they secretly fear their hometown will have changed, so they almost wish the war would never end.”

One moment I’d desperately want it all to end because it was utterly unbearable, and the next, thinking of home, I’d feel viscerally how much time I’d lost all alone.

“I think I worried a lot about what would happen if I returned and found I had no place left. I know I did.”

“You felt that way too?”

“Of course.”

After all, I was walking a path no one else had taken. How often does a princess stand on the battlefield with a sword in hand?

Then Hadel asked in a strangely subdued tone,

“Did you never feel the urge for revenge?”

“Revenge?”

“While your other family members stayed comfortably in the palace, you suffered alone for years. Weren’t you angry?”

“Espen once said something like that, too.”
