Espen grinned mockingly at Hadel and replied.

“From the very beginning, I suppose.”

I had thought the intruders had been inside the royal palace for quite some time—but never imagined it had been from the very start. At his words, both Hadel and I stiffened. Espen pointed at me with his finger.

“That woman died, and I went completely mad. Then, a monster came to me. It was one of the Demonkin.”

Demonkin.

Creatures that fed on human malice and fear. While other non-human races aimed only to drive others beyond the mountains, the Demonkin sought outright annihilation from the start—because they were far too dangerous.

But to think the Demonkin approached Espen right after my death? I vehemently denied it.

“That’s impossible. The Demonkin were all exterminated.”

“Yes. But one of them survived—a demon who, like me, had lost someone they loved and was drowning in sorrow. We were so alike that merging together came easily.”

I couldn’t comprehend Espen’s words.

‘Demonkin weren’t a race capable of loving anyone.’

They were utterly alien to humankind. Before I could even retort, Espen spoke again, his voice brimming with agitation.

“To bring you back, I returned to the capital with your heart. Do you know what your father said to me then?”

Espen’s flushed face vividly conveyed the fury he’d felt that day.

“He told me to bury you in history—calling it a noble death.”
