“It doesn’t make sense that you, who is not all that impressive, are Min Chul’s girlfriend. Isn’t it so?”
Her sharp words, like shattered pieces of glass, flew straight into her heart.
“And do you think Min Chul’s family would accept a girl like you who has nothing special as their daughterinlaw? They would probably accept someone like me as the first daughterinlaw of the Seong Group.”

“What? What did you just say… What group?”
“You’re not about to tell me you didn’t know Min Chul is the eldest son of the Chairman of Seong Group, are you?”
“….”
She didn’t know. She had no idea.

He had only ever mentioned that his father ran a small business and that he wanted to help out modestly after graduation.

That’s how she found out his true identity, and she felt the distance between them.

A week had passed since she started avoiding Min Chul’s persistent contact.

A call came from an unknown number.
[Is this Su Ah’s phone?]
It was a middleaged woman’s voice.

And so, she found herself face to face with Min Chul’s mother at a café near the school.
“I’m sorry for asking to meet so abruptly.”

“Yesterday, Min Chul came home and said he wants to marry Su Ah.”
“Marriage?”
He had always hesitated and dodged the topic whenever marriage was brought up, and now he suddenly wanted to get married. She was flabbergasted.

Min Chul’s mother continued speaking in an eerily calm voice.
“Marriage isn’t a game for children, it can’t be done with just any girl, right?”

After finishing her speech, Min Chul’s mother took a white envelope out of her bag and placed it on the table.
“Thank you for the happy times you’ve spent with our Min Chul. Please consider this a token of appreciation for those times.”

Her wavering gaze lingered on the envelope.

The precious time she had spent with Min Chul had been calculated in terms of money and was now contained within that envelope.

It was then that she first realized.

A person could be made miserable and pitiful by a single envelope.
“I can’t accept this.”
“It’s okay. It’s just a token of gratitude.”
“No. I won’t accept it. And there will be no marriage with Min Chul, so don’t worry. I should get going.”
She hurriedly got up and left the café.

On the way back, Su Ah, who could not bear to meet him or even make a phone call, sent a message to end things.

She had cried so much all night that she was bedridden for a week, unable to even step outside the door.

Fearful of encountering him, she spent each day until graduation with an anxious heart.

And then, after a while, news came that the two had set a date for their wedding.
