Miheu smiled silently at Noah’s words. She had just been returning from spending yet another long stretch of time in Noah’s study. It sounded somewhat incongruous—how the Emperor’s close aide would so attentively care for a mere librarian.

Indeed, even Simoren had remarked to Noah before that he couldn’t understand why Noah cared so deeply about Miheu—it was truly unusual.

Yet Noah felt precisely the opposite: he regretted that this was all he could do for her. At times, it felt utterly inadequate. Watching over Miheu was, for Noah, a kind of atonement.

‘On the surface… I do have the official reason of needing to protect Miss Miheu.’

But his decision to personally take on that protection stemmed solely from a secret debt he owed her.

Noah Ernst turned his bitter gaze sideways, careful not to let his companion walking beside him notice.

In just over a month, the Imperial Palace had changed greatly. Perhaps it was only natural, given that someone had died—but Noah was the only one who knew the true starting point hadn’t been Anette Martinek’s death.

As far as Noah could surmise, everything had begun with Miheu’s journal.

‘Perhaps one could even say it all started the moment Anette Martinek met Miss Miheu.’

Truth, in one way or another, always eventually surfaces. Eternal concealment is nothing but an illusion.

Starting from Miheu’s journal, both Noah and Anette had come to know the truth. It simply hadn’t become visible because neither had spoken a word.

‘Anette Martinek—or rather, Lowell Hessen.’

She had rummaged through Noah’s study so blatantly it made the word “obvious” seem inadequate, then left without a trace. Considering Lowell’s usual calculated behavior, it might have been a signal meant for Noah. Had he not misinterpreted it, would things have deteriorated this badly?
