When he first heard Lowell’s question, Peter fell into deep thought over whether he should tell her the truth about what he knew. Should he say that Anette knew she was Lowell herself? The answer to this brief inner conflict was simple.

‘No.’

Lowell wanted him not to recognize her. Otherwise, there would be no need for her to pretend to be Anette and ask about Lowell.

Peter decided to play along. At least, as long as she claimed to be Anette—if that meant she could stay by his side—Peter didn’t care at all.

‘How hypocritical.’

Peter unconsciously let out a bitter scoff at his own hypocrisy, which felt absurdly artificial even as he genuinely wished for her presence. Though he knew exactly what he ought to do, he couldn’t bring himself to reach out. He feared that if he did, Lowell might leave him once again. Now, he could no longer return to the life he’d lived before—without Lowell, without Anette.

“As long as you stay by my side, nothing else matters.”

“…Even if I say I don’t want Your Majesty?”

“If you wish to hate me, then hate me.”

Just do it beside me.

Perhaps this, too, was a kind of madness. After all, isn’t love often said to resemble madness?
