Whether by fortune or misfortune, Anette followed her into the garden without a trace of suspicion. Thanks to that, she didn’t even need to utter the excuse she’d prepared all the way until they reached the secluded path in the garden.

Only after arriving at a place where there wasn’t even a hint of human presence did she glance around with a puzzled expression.

“How strange. I thought everyone would be around here—why can’t I see anyone?”

“Maybe they arranged to meet somewhere else?”

“I’ve been here a few times before, and usually everyone gathers near this area.”

“Oh, really?”

Anette asked back like that while fiddling with a russet-colored bench tucked in a corner of the garden. Because of that, she couldn’t get a good look at Anette’s expression. But even if she had, she probably wouldn’t have noticed anything amiss.

“It seems we missed each other. Let me go look for them—I’ll be right back! Stay here!”

She called out like that and vanished around the corner before Anette could even say a word.

Leaving Anette alone in the garden as the cold wind blew.

Whoooosh. The winter wind swept roughly through Lowell’s hair. Feeling its chill against her cheeks, Lowell pulled her hand away from the bench she’d been touching. She already knew, of course, that the woman who’d left her behind wouldn’t return. She’d also realized long ago that this was someone’s scheme.

‘I heard about it from Yvonne, but this is just too cliché.’

Lowell felt slightly disappointed since nothing she’d secretly hoped for had happened upon coming here.

If you’re going to lure someone to such a desolate spot, shouldn’t you at least threaten them or surround them with waiting accomplices? By Lowell’s standards, Klech’s preparations were far too weak.

‘If I hadn’t come prepared, I’d have been in real trouble.’
