After Debona left, René returned to his office. Soon, his servant entered and knelt before him.

“I have moved Debona to the imperial palace and collected the bodies, as you instructed.”

“And the payment?”

“I delivered it to the families of the deceased. They will be able to live out their remaining days without hardship. However…”

Ruben’s sentence trailed off. Given his usual crisp, decisive manner of speaking, this hesitation clearly meant something troubled him. René waited patiently, almost cheerfully, for Ruben’s confession.

“…We failed to recover the demon sword.”

“Anette must have it. Leave it be. After all, it’s meaningless to anyone who doesn’t know how to use it.”
