Peter remembered young Lowell as not particularly kind-hearted. The girl was often unwell and, having always been doted upon, was somewhat irritable and selfish. Sometimes she would sulk all day over the slightest thing.

At least Peter had never once opposed anything Lowell wanted, so he was relatively safe from her outbursts. But Lowell, being willful, could easily take offense even after getting along well and quickly put on a sulky face.

“Lowell, are you over your anger now?”

“No, I’m not.”

“Then could you at least tell me why you’re mad?”

“Because I hate you. I can’t even stand the sight of you—just go away.”

Despite Lowell’s irritable tone, Peter remained steadfastly by her side. He knew well that this was the quickest way to calm her down. Lowell hated being alone most of all, and feeling excluded was her second greatest dislike. Thus, the rare times Lowell got angry at Peter were usually due to the latter reason.

“I told you to go! Go talk to Hailey. You two looked like you were having fun.”

By now, Peter finally understood why Lowell was upset.

“Are you angry because I talked to your cousin?”

“…….”

Her silence was practically an admission. From Peter’s perspective, it was rather baffling.

Hailey was a girl he wouldn’t have exchanged even a single word with if they’d been in the imperial palace. Yet hadn’t it been Lowell herself who’d insisted he greet her cousin and be friendly? He’d merely done as asked, and that girl Hailey had simply shown interest in him.

‘I even held back from telling her to shut up and get lost.’

Who could have known that holding back would backfire? Clearly, Lowell was deeply unsettled by seeing Peter—who normally showed no interest in anyone—chatting amiably with Hailey.
