The uninvited guests who had just barged into Karim’s mansion had all left. Yet, strangely enough, René’s request—considering how forcefully they’d pushed their way in—was truly nothing extraordinary.

After all, his entire request was merely to “convey the truth.”

Of course, as René had warned, it wouldn’t exactly benefit Karim. But if René had gone out of his way to visit Karim with this request, shouldn’t it at least benefit René himself?

Just how would telling Anette the truth about the Hessen family fire possibly benefit him?

Seeing Karim’s puzzled expression, René leaned his chin on his hand with an air of amusement and let out a soft chuckle.

[You look utterly baffled. Was my request really that unexpected?]

[…I simply don’t understand what you’re hoping to gain from this.]

[There’s no real benefit in knowing too much. At your age and position, shouldn’t you already understand that?]

That the one who knows the most is often the first to die.

René’s casually uttered warning hardened Karim’s expression—not out of mere fear this time, but because of the underlying insult.

‘Damn this arrogant brat.’

Though Karim bowed to him knowing he couldn’t possibly win, he was still old enough to be René’s father. Being lectured and threatened by such a greenhorn at every turn was infuriating. Karim felt an urge to wipe that smug, ever-smiling face of René’s clean off forever.

Yet, had he truly been so hot-headed, he never would have made it this far. Karim knew full well that understanding René’s true intentions mattered far more than ruining his face. Thus, he suppressed his frustration and asked,

[As you well know, the Hessen family records were sealed by the Emperor himself. Telling the Emperor’s bride about them poses just as great a risk to me, doesn’t it?]

[That’s precisely why I called it a request.]
