Lowell finally understood why Peter had said it would be hard for him to skip this occasion. She had thought it strange that a tyrant would struggle so much over missing just one meal, but she hadn’t realized this meal would be such a grand affair.

‘I thought it would be smaller than Tillemann’s memorial banquet.’

Actually, that one had fewer guests. This gathering was open to anyone with the proper credentials, whereas that one involved specially curated invitations—so perhaps it was only natural.

Unfortunately for Lowell, who had considered Tillemann’s banquet already quite large, this was quite a shock. She might have enjoyed watching the spectacle under normal circumstances, but certainly not now, when she wasn’t feeling well at all.

Thus, Lowell planned to quietly slip away after the meal, just as the luncheon was transitioning into the garden party held in the courtyard.

At least, that had been her intention—until Klech appeared before her.

The Klech she met again no longer grinned playfully, showed no interest in feigning friendliness toward her, and didn’t even gleam-eyedly observe Lowell as before. Instead, she exuded an air that felt colder and more mature.

‘It’s a bit odd to call this outright hostility toward me.’

Hostility or wariness doesn’t fundamentally change a person. Of course, one’s demeanor toward others might shift, but anything beyond that seemed unlikely—yet Klech appeared to have changed more than that.

What could have happened in just one night? As Lowell involuntarily wondered this, Klech spoke.

“Did you get back to your room alright last night? I’ve been worried—I feel bad for not properly seeing you off.”

“Worried? That’s surprising. Since I never expected an escort from a place where people talk behind your back after inviting you, there was no need for you to trouble yourself.”

Klech’s face, which had been forcing a smile, hardened instantly at Lowell’s bluntly sharp words.

“Lady Anette, did you really have to bring that up here?”

“If you were going to stop someone passing by, you should’ve expected at least this much conversation. It’s rather careless of you to approach me without even considering that.”
