Lowell’s hand, reaching for the doorknob, froze abruptly. Unaware that she stood outside, inside the room gossip was in full swing.

“How stiff and uptight! It’s laughable. We went out of our way to invite her, and she doesn’t even show gratitude.”

“She’s a duke’s daughter, after all—she’s had every luxury handed to her.”

“So what? She’s still only half a noble.”

Half a noble—that was the dismissive phrase outsiders used to belittle Martinek.

With such power and status, yet stuck away in the shadows—it was indeed laughable.

“Besides, her hair is black! What kind of noble is that?”

“Isn’t it dyed?”

“Whether dyed or not, it’s ridiculous either way. If it is dyed, she’s clearly desperate to catch His Majesty’s eye; if not, it just proves she’s a bastard.”

Barbed words flew back and forth, followed by their own giggling laughter.

“We weren’t even planning to invite her to the birthday banquet anyway, so it’s perfect she left on her own.”

“What would you have said if she hadn’t left, Lady Hoz?”

“I was going to say we didn’t prepare an invitation because we didn’t expect her. That would’ve been even more embarrassing.”

Though fragmented, the conversation was enough for Lowell to grasp the situation. Standing quietly behind the door, she listened and thought.

‘No wonder it felt strange.’
