When I heard Simoren say he wished for Anette to leave him, the first emotion that arose—ironically—was resentment.

An absurdly intense resentment at the thought that I would do anything to obtain information about Lowell.

‘Let Anette go?’

The idea of Anette leaving my side to live an ordinary life suddenly stung as if my insides had been scorched.

This had nothing to do with my feelings toward Anette. How dare she live a life unrelated to me, after appearing before me wearing Lowell’s face and ruthlessly tearing open every fragile memory I’d barely managed to bury?

If it were anyone else, perhaps it wouldn’t matter—but not her. Not ever while she bore Lowell’s likeness.

Had she merely been another woman approaching me like all the others, I might not have felt this way at all.

But Anette couldn’t be like that. At the very least, not while wearing Lowell’s face.

Lowell’s world clearly needed me to exist within it. Just as Lowell existed within a part of me, she too had to belong there.

Even if Anette and Lowell were truly different people, the notion of her living a life disconnected from me while wearing Lowell’s face sounded profoundly wrong.

Whether Anette had come of her own will or not, everything had been decided that night.

Anette Martinek was his doll—and his Lowell.

Yet the idea of his doll leaving him was utterly absurd.

Beneath the seemingly rational justification for his decision seeped this ridiculous, childish petulance.

Yet, on the other hand, part of him genuinely wanted to let her go—if that was truly what Anette wished.
