“A report regarding the guest list has arrived, Your Majesty. All those invited have sent replies confirming their attendance, except for a notice from Count Wignel’s household stating that the count is unwell and will be unable to attend.”

“That’s fine. Count Wignel’s condition hasn’t been improving for days, so this is no surprise. You may go now.”

After hearing his aide’s report, Peter waved his hand dismissively and began tying his cravat. Though he could have ordered a servant to do it, Peter usually dressed himself—largely because he intensely disliked being touched by others.

His expression was far from cheerful as he carefully adjusted the cravat to avoid snagging it on the boutonniere or medals adorning his formal attire, which was anything but comfortable.

Yet Peter’s somber mood stemmed from another reason entirely.

Once the Emperor’s aide had left the room, Simoren, who had been standing beside him, spoke up.

“Then, Your Majesty, may I now inquire about how you’d like to proceed with the matter I mentioned earlier?”

“……”

“Regarding entering the banquet hall together with Lady Anette.”

Simoren even specified the point explicitly, fearing Peter might have forgotten—but no reply came.

Indeed, this very issue was what had troubled Peter all day.

Anette had sent her guard, Simoren, to Peter to ask whether they should enter the banquet hall together.

“If Your Majesty does not wish it, I shall inform Lady Anette to enter separately.”

“That would make for excellent gossip among the Margraves gathered here. Not content with rumors spreading only within the Imperial Palace, we’d now be flinging them all the way to the frontier.”

“Then… will you enter with Lady Anette?”
