Consequently, very few knew the true color of the Martinek mansion. Perhaps only its current master, René Martinek, knew that the walls were painted a rather soft cream.

From afar, it appeared eerie; up close, however, it held a strangely comforting warmth.

René recalled the moment he had wondered whether he was the only one who truly understood the mansion’s colors.

[“The mansion is white? Well, the walls certainly are… No, come to think of it, the ceiling is too. And the floor as well… Why didn’t I realize that before?”]

Those were the words of the only nanny who had ever shown René kindness. As a child, René had dismissed them as a feeble excuse to mask poor memory.

‘It’s not like I’m the only one living here my whole life—why wouldn’t they know? They’re just stupid.’

Most of the Martinek household staff were families who had served the Martineks for generations. From childhood until death, they belonged entirely to the Martinek name. Thus, claiming they didn’t know because it wasn’t their home was merely a cover for their dullness.

In truth, René had always seen the world this way.
