“Peter, you didn’t forget me, did you? You weren’t trying to forget me?”

“How could I possibly forget you?”

His next words came out strangely muffled. Peter rose from his chair and slowly approached her.

His blue eyes burned fiercely, as if ready to crush her throat at any moment.

“I wanted to forget you. I tried to forget you. But you insisted on appearing before me, forcing even the memories I’d buried back into my face. So how could I ever forget you, Lowell?”

Lowell. His voice cracked as he repeated her name. The man himself was a contradiction—staring at her with suppressed hatred as though he wanted to kill her instantly, yet ultimately crumbling before her.

“I’m sorry, Lowell. Truly sorry. Sorry for shamelessly staying alive. Sorry for making you die, for hurting you, for ruining your life….”

His voice was flat, but his words were anything but. Even a fanatic’s confession would have sounded more logical.

Apologizing for everything that had happened to Lowell, he pleaded,

“Please… just let me stop killing you now….”
