Before opening her eyes, Ji An’s consciousness stirred first, and she softly curved her lips as she sensed Dan Woo’s presence.

Gently pushing her eyelids open, she found Dan Woo lying beside her, already watching her. His arm draped loosely over her back, deeply asleep.

Their first night together at Dan Woo’s penthouse had passed.

Remembering how she’d dreamt again and tossed restlessly, she let out an involuntary sigh. She felt utterly drained from how desperately she’d moved in her dream.

Careful not to wake the soundly sleeping Dan Woo, Ji An quietly slipped out of bed.

Stepping out of the monochrome bedroom, she walked silently. The marble floor of the living room felt cold beneath her feet, and she wiggled her toes as she took in the still-dark house.

She never imagined she’d end up living in this house.

Quietly climbing the low stairs leading to the balcony, she pulled her knees to her chest and sat before the floor-to-ceiling window.

Gazing at the predawn sky, she remembered countless sunrises she’d seen in Jeju. It had been a time when she’d resolved to move away from Ha Jun and worked tirelessly to steel her heart.

Thinking back on how firmly she’d believed in herself and the moments others had cheered her on, Ji An took a deep breath.

Waking to find the bed empty and hollow, Dan Woo had stepped into the living room and leaned against the wall. Watching Ji An sit alone in the darkness, his chest ached unexpectedly.

Though he’d slept longer than usual, it still tore his heart apart whenever Ji An woke up crying.

Dan Woo went into the kitchen, grabbed a bottle of water, and climbed the low stairs.

Guilt gnawed at him for having slept so deeply he hadn’t noticed Ji An waking, and he finally spoke.

“Did you have another nightmare?”
