In the end, I left the main palace with Grand Duke Martines and strolled through the garden.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

I had nothing in particular to say, and the Duke seemed to be holding his words back.

Though he had something to convey and I had something to hear, we both remained silent.

We walked and walked again, breathing in the fresh scent of grass.

“Approval must have come through by now.”

That was the first thing Grand Duke Martines said to me since we entered the garden.

“Are you referring to the concubine issue?”

“Yes. How do you feel about it?”

“I wonder why you’d ask such a question. You’re the one who knows my true identity best.”

If I had truly been the Empress, that scoundrel walking beside me would have already been shattered by my own hands.

“That’s precisely why I’m even more curious. Have you perhaps developed feelings for His Majesty already?”

My chest tightened at Grand Duke Martines’s words.
