“No, why…?”

Hae Joo was simply stunned.

Jin Han, who also hadn’t known the guest’s identity, nearly spilled the water in his cup.

“That person is President Park Do Jun, right?”

“Yes.”

Jin Han still harbored negative feelings toward Do Jun. Because of their heated confrontation on the day he helped Hae Joo move, it was awkward to face him now.

There were many unresolved suspicions surrounding Do Jun. After this scandal, Jin Han found himself doubting everything about him.

He was furious at Do Jun’s arrogance—acting as if he’d been Hae Joo’s husband from the start and asserting dominance with such condescension.

Yet it was baffling that the investor Director Kwak had praised endlessly turned out to be none other than Do Jun.

“So, Manager Yoo Jin Han and Ms. Hae Joo were already here.”

“Yes. Please come in.”

“You know this person, right? President Park Do Jun. Ms. Hae Joo obviously does.”

Hae Joo’s and Do Jun’s eyes met.

He gave her a look as if asking why she was staring at him like that, as though she’d lost her mind.

Jin Han was just as flustered. He stared blankly at Do Jun, who extended his hand for a handshake first, then hurriedly pulled out his own right hand.

“So President Park Do Jun is the main investor for this film.”

“Jino Group has been actively investing in cultural ventures since last year.”

“It seems Ms. Hae Joo wasn’t aware of this either.”

The atmosphere grew tense.

Director Kwak nervously glanced around, sensing the sudden shift in mood.

“Ms. Hae Joo, you really didn’t know President Park was the investor?”

“…Yes.”

“President Park, why did you do that?”

Director Kwak asked Do Jun playfully.

At this, Do Jun relaxed his expression into a faint smile.

“I heard you were going out to eat, so I wanted to borrow this opportunity to talk.”

“…”

“But it seems everyone here isn’t exactly thrilled to see me.”

“Not at all. I heard you’ve trusted us completely to finish this film.”

Jin Han quickly adjusted his expression. As someone whose job required interacting with people, he couldn’t afford to let past emotions guide him.

After all, Do Jun was a crucial investor who’d made this film possible. It was only proper to treat him with appropriate respect.

“I didn’t so much trust GN Entertainment as I placed my bet on the actress Lee Hae Joo.”

“Of course… I suppose that makes sense.”

Hae Joo’s palms grew clammy from the dangerously tense exchange between the two men.

She was especially anxious because of Do Jun.

Though he wasn’t saying anything factually wrong, she wondered if he really had to say it so bluntly right here.

“You could’ve told me beforehand, even yesterday would’ve been fine.”

Hae Joo awkwardly broke the silence.

This meant she now had to sit not beside Jin Han but next to Do Jun.

True enough, Director Kwak naturally began readjusting the chairs.

“Ms. Hae Joo, you should sit over here. A married couple should sit side by side.”

Hae Joo, holding her bag, moved. Jin Han shifted aside, forcing his stiffening expression to relax.

Undeterred, Do Jun pulled out a chair and seated Hae Joo first.

“Hand me your bag.”

“Yes.”

Do Jun carried not only striking good looks but also a uniquely aloof demeanor that made him difficult to approach.

Yet his attitude toward Hae Joo alone was the very definition of attentiveness.

Jin Han could only sigh in disbelief, recalling the Do Jun he’d met just days ago.

“The two of you really look great together.”

“Thank you.”

Hae Joo responded politely to Director Kwak’s compliment.

Inside, however, she was tangled up by last night’s bathroom blackout incident.

She still wasn’t used to this kind of pretense. She wished she could feel more at ease, but standing before Do Jun only made it harder.

Once everyone settled into their seats, Jin Han casually opened the conversation.

“I have many questions for you, President Park Do Jun.”

“Do you?”

Work was work, after all.

Although Jin Han didn’t want to admit it, he couldn’t deny that Do Jun was legally Hae Joo’s husband.

Setting aside personal feelings, he asked frankly,

“Did you commission Director Kwak to make this film specifically for Ms. Hae Joo from the very beginning?”

Director Kwak was famously known for his strong, unique artistic vision—not the type easily swayed by money—so Jin Han voiced his lingering doubts.

“Do you think Director Kwak is someone easily influenced by others?”

“Not really.”

“The script already existed before I decided to invest. And when I happened to meet him, he mentioned he’d had Hae Joo in mind for the lead.”

Beside them, Director Kwak chuckled and picked up where Do Jun left off.

“I was actually struggling to find funding for this film, so President Park stepping in felt like a miracle.”

“Director Kwak couldn’t find investors?”

“Well, this film in particular was especially niche, after all.”

Jin Han had assumed Do Jun had been pulling strings behind the scenes all along.

But now that he heard this explanation, it actually sounded plausible.

“I was quite shocked myself when I heard you two were married. I even wondered if you’d approached me on purpose, haha!”

Director Kwak’s easygoing laugh loosened the tension somewhat.

Jin Han nodded and signaled a nearby restaurant staff member who’d been watching discreetly.

“Let’s order first. What would you like?”

“They have set courses here too.”

“Then let’s go with the lunch set. Is that alright, Hae Joo?”

Hae Joo, who had been dazed, flinched.

It wasn’t because Jin Han called her—it was because Do Jun had nudged her heel with the toe of his shoe that startled her even more.

“Y-yes. That’s fine with me too.”

After ordering, appetizers arrived promptly. Just as everyone picked up their spoons, Director Kwak began recalling the past.

“Though it’s after the fact, I nearly had a heart attack when Ms. Hae Joo got caught up in that marriage scandal.”

“Same here.”

“But President Park kept insisting it was fine and told me to move forward.”

“Yeah…”

Hae Joo, with food still in her mouth, glanced sideways at Do Jun.

“So you kept pushing me to lower the film’s rating—there was a reason all along, wasn’t there, President Park?”

At the teasing question, Do Jun’s lips curved faintly upward. He set down his spoon and replied coolly,

“No matter how good the acting is, what man would willingly watch his wife get intimate with another guy?”

Do Jun’s sharp gaze landed squarely on Jin Han.

On their way here, Director Kwak had mentioned that Jin Han had played a role in casting Hae Joo as So Hee.

Do Jun’s suggestion to lower the film’s rating was a business decision, not charity—of course profits had to be considered.

Only after committing to invest did he learn Hae Joo was being considered for the lead role.

If he hadn’t pushed to lower the rating in advance, it could’ve been disastrous.

“True, aggressively lowering a film’s rating might help commercially, but it compromises the film’s unique character.”

Jin Han held his ground.

He’d recommended Hae Joo based on the original script before any edits.

To appeal to film festivals, bold direction was essential.

Especially for Hae Joo—it was the perfect moment in her career, so it was truly a shame.

“You’re making it sound as though I’m some evil investor.”

“I was merely stating my opinion.”

“Do you care about Hae Joo?”

“Of course. I discovered her and launched her debut—she’s precious to me.”

“Then shouldn’t you genuinely care for her?”

“What do you mean?”

“Nudity doesn’t equal art.”

“…!”

“When she’s fully developed her skills and can discern a good project herself, I’ll respect her choices then.”

Jin Han fell silent.

Do Jun’s calm, steady rebuttal was convincingly reasonable.

Pressuring Director Kwak yesterday during their meeting to cast Hae Joo as So Hee now seemed like a short-sighted move.

“I suppose I didn’t consider Ms. Hae Joo’s position properly on that matter.”

“Please continue taking good care of Hae Joo, Manager Yoo Jin Han.”

Hae Joo herself hadn’t realized Do Jun had thought this deeply.

When he brought up divorce and insisted there should be no romance scenes, she’d felt resentment—she’d assumed he was just using his husbandly authority without understanding film.

Now, however, she was almost impressed by Do Jun’s foresight.

Even the tasteless appetizer now warmed her empty stomach and brought her comfort.

Across the table, Jin Han kept gulping water, clearly unable to enjoy the delicious dishes in front of him.

“Manager, is the food not to your liking?”

“It’s delicious. Hae Joo, you should eat quickly too.”

The conversation naturally shifted to the film.

Director Kwak shared his plan to hold auditions for other candidate actors.

Midway through the talk, Do Jun transferred the lamb from his plate to Hae Joo’s.

Caught off guard by this unexpected gesture, Hae Joo didn’t know what to do.

“You like lamb, don’t you? Eat.”

Jin Han also knew well that Hae Joo loved charcoal-grilled lamb.

He’d often bought it for her under various pretexts, but Do Jun knowing her preferences surprised him.

How on earth did he know?

Hae Joo had many questions, but for now, she stayed silent.

“Thank you.”

Jin Han, seated across from them, didn’t look pleased either. When Do Jun casually draped his arm over Hae Joo’s chair, Jin Han drank another glass of water in quick succession.

Soon, the complex and awkward meal finally came to an end.

Hae Joo dabbed her lips with a napkin and excused herself from the table.

“I’ll go touch up my makeup.”

“I’ll come too!”

Hae Joo and Director Kwak left the table and headed separately toward the restrooms.

The moment they disappeared completely, Jin Han confronted Do Jun directly.

“Are you deliberately acting like this in front of me?”

“Do I look that idle to you?”

Jin Han leaned back in his chair.

He’d held back while Hae Joo was present—but not now.

“How much do you really know about Ms. Hae Joo?”

“More than you, Manager Yoo Jin Han.”

“I’ve known Ms. Hae Joo since she struggled to make ends meet through part-time jobs.”

“Three years? No, scratch that—I’ve known Hae Joo far longer than that.”

“President Park Do Jun, you’ve only maintained a legal marital relationship with Ms. Hae Joo—you haven’t actually lived together. But I’ve walked side by side with her through every step of her life.”

Do Jun tapped his untouched spoon lightly against the table. The coldness lingering on his lips reached Jin Han as well.

“If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have even met Hae Joo.”

“…!”

“Do you even understand Hae Joo’s sense of lack?”

“Mind your manners.”

“You’ll never understand—not even if you came back from the dead.”

As Do Jun spoke with open hostility, dark red veins rose along Jin Han’s neck. At this rate, he’d have to stoop to Do Jun’s level just to be heard.

“Oh, really? Then tell me, Park Do Jun—what exactly are you going to do about it?”

For a moment, the sound of Do Jun’s spoon against the table stopped entirely.

Do Jun’s faint smile vanished. He finally spoke the words he’d long wanted to say.

“Hae Joo is my wife. She’s not someone you’re allowed to desire.”

“But didn’t you marry Ms. Hae Joo only because of her mother’s debt? Can you really call her your wife under those circumstances?”

“Of course I can.”

“Why?”

“Because I’ll never divorce Hae Joo.”

“That’s not what we agreed on!”

“I never promised you anything from the start. I only said I’d watch and see.”

Just then, Director Kwak returned to the table.

Noticing the sudden chill in the air, he asked cautiously,

“What were you two talking about?”

Jin Han avoided answering, smoothing his collar unnecessarily. In contrast, Do Jun’s face relaxed with ease.

“Oh, it’s a call from the office. Excuse me for a moment.”

Director Kwak grabbed his phone and hurriedly left the table.

Seizing the opportunity, Jin Han immediately fired off his emotionally charged question.

“President Park Do Jun, weren’t you focused solely on your own success while Ms. Hae Joo was struggling all those years?”

“And why do you think I needed that success?”

“What?”

“You’ll understand someday—the reason it took me so long to reunite with Hae Joo.”

With that meaningful statement from Do Jun, their verbal clash ended.

Hae Joo had just returned to the table.

Director Kwak also finished his brief call. Jin Han stood up.

“Shall we go?”

He acted as if nothing had happened. Do Jun nodded quietly, stood up, and took Hae Joo’s car keys.

“I’ll drive. I left my car at the office.”

“Alright.”

Across the table, Jin Han put on his suit jacket.

He checked the time and held Hae Joo back gently.

“Ms. Hae Joo, you didn’t forget our arrangement after lunch, did you?”

“Oh, that?”

“President Park Do Jun, I’ll be the one taking Ms. Hae Joo home later.”

Do Jun’s brow furrowed.

He hadn’t known Hae Joo had another appointment after lunch and asked directly,

“What’s going on?”

“It’s about something the manager…”

“There’s an upcoming charity fashion show, and we have a lot to decide regarding outfits.”

Jin Han cut in before Hae Joo could finish.

Hae Joo looked at him questioningly, unaware of this schedule.

“I’ve been so busy I completely forgot to tell you—Ms. Min Hee already brought over a bunch of outfits to the office.”

“Really?”

Since it was work-related, Do Jun couldn’t reasonably stop her, even if he doubted Jin Han’s words. He reluctantly stepped back.

“Drive yourself there.”

“But didn’t you say you don’t have your car?”

“Just take a taxi.”

After leaving the restaurant, Director Kwak departed first, saying he was busy.

Before getting into his parked car, Jin Han offered Do Jun a final farewell.

It was both Do Jun’s plea and his command.

Side Story 5 Side Story 4

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.

Intro

As an enchantress, Su Heng possesses captivating eyes and charming beauty, easily manipulating the joys and sorrows of living beings at her fingertips.

But to enchant a god, making him taste the bitterness of love’s separation, long-lasting resentment, unattainable desires, and inability to let go…

Do you dare?

Su Heng assists a divine lord in his cultivation, aiming to make him experience all the sufferings of love, so that he can attain the Great Dao.

Only after being chased down from the heavens by the divine lord, confined and completely possessed by him, does she realize how successful she has been.

The once gentle and polite youth has transformed into someone she no longer recognizes.
