She couldn’t possibly know Prince Seongwon’s name—and indeed, she’d never even heard it before.

“I don’t know. Why do you ask?”

When she questioned him, clearly puzzled as to why he’d be curious about that, he responded not with an answer but with another question.

“Have you ever drawn a picture for Prince Seongwon?”

“I once drew him a picture—he’d asked me to do so. Did it perhaps upset him?”

“It’s not that—I’d just like you to tell me what kind of picture it was.”

She described in detail the picture she’d drawn for him.

After hearing her full explanation, he fell silent for a moment, deep in thought.

Wondering if perhaps her memory was mistaken, he asked once more.

“Are you absolutely certain it was only a plum tree you drew?”

“Yes. When he requested a portrait, I refused and instead drew a plum tree.”

“My lady, this may sound abrupt, but going forward, I suggest you keep some distance from Prince Seongwon. As I’ve said before, being the subject of idle gossip is never advisable.”

In truth, she wasn’t close enough to Prince Seongwon to begin with—she’d never felt comfortable around him, and every meeting only grew more awkward.

He wasn’t the kind to bring up a painting out of the blue, so she couldn’t help but worry that something troubling had happened.

Seeing her growing increasingly anxious, he let out a soft chuckle.
