In Cain’s hand was a note. It was a message from the Black Hawk.

Petals fluttered around the griffin.

The griffin was the symbol of House Hastings. And the petals represented the Rose Faction.

In other words, it meant the Rose Faction was lurking around Somnium House.

Cain unrolled the tightly rolled note by twirling it with his thumb. Rearranging the numbers written at the bottom of the note produced a date.

From the day Jane came home until now.

Judging solely by the note, it appeared Jane had brought the Rose Faction right into Somnium House.

Cain crumpled the verified note like a ball and sank into thought.

Considering the Rose Faction pamphlet previously found at Jane’s house and this new note, the hypothesis that Jane had been in contact with the Rose Faction from before gained credibility.

However, according to the Black Hawk’s preliminary investigation, she had never met with the Rose Faction.

On the contrary, she had thoroughly ignored them—disregarding speeches held in the square and throwing away pamphlets someone handed her straight into the trash bin.

Yet, based solely on that, it was difficult to definitively conclude Jane had no connection to the Rose Faction.

The Whitneys were adept at acting and possessed a natural talent for deception.

Hadn’t even Duke Hastings been deceived by Earl Whitney?

And that deception had ended in death.
