At the sound of the door opening, Augustus lifted his head. Having already been told who the visitor was, Augustus scowled upon seeing the chief of police enter the room.

“Where the hell do you get off glaring at me like that?”

Without warning, the chief of police struck Augustus hard on the head.

Augustus lifted his chin and shot a fierce glare back, but bound tightly to a stone chair, the only protest he could manage was shaking his shoulders.

Even that limited resistance was risky—he might topple over if he moved too much.

Whether he slammed his shoulder or his head into the stone floor, it would only hurt himself.

All Augustus was allowed while detained in the holding cell was patience.

‘My temper’s completely gone to shit. Damn it.’

If his subordinates saw Augustus lowering his eyes after taking a hit from someone else, they’d be utterly shocked.

But what could he do?

Augustus wanted to live—and preferably live richly, luxuriously, with others groveling beneath his feet.

To achieve that, he needed to safely leave this detention center. Or, alternatively, the Rose Faction would have to act smartly and get him out.

From what he’d overheard about the current situation, the Rose Faction had failed.

He’d briefly pinned his hopes on Cedric, but the man showed no intention whatsoever of rescuing him.

In the end, Augustus had no choice but to find a way out of the detention center himself—and ironically, that chance rested in the hands of Cain, the very man he’d tried to kill.
