Jane knocked on the door of the lodging.

“Thank you for coming.”

Phil swung the door wide open and greeted Jane warmly. Jane gave a slight nod in greeting and stepped into the hotel room.

The hotel suite had separate bedrooms and a living room. Jane cast a quick glance at the tightly closed bedroom door and then walked into the living room. A simple drink had been prepared on the table.

“You used to love lemon drinks when you were young.”

“Did I?”

Jane offered a polite, perfunctory reply and sat down on the sofa.

“If you have something to say, get on with it, Phil. We’re both busy.”

Jane didn’t even glance at the lemon drink placed before her.

Her mind was occupied solely with ending the conversation as quickly as possible and returning home.

She was still uneasy about having rushed out without being able to check on Joseph’s studies, all because Phil had suddenly contacted her during dinner.

Phil studied Jane’s displeased expression intently.

In his mind, he kept weighing Cain against Jane.

With whom would it be more advantageous for me to deal?
