Yeoreum lifted her still dazed eyes to look at Jihyeok.

Jihyeok wasn’t paying attention to Yeoreum. At this moment, the most important thing for him seemed to be the intestines, as he fiercely focused on conquering the grill. Yeoreum, who had been alternately glancing between the grill and Jihyeok, now shifted her gaze to the grill following him.

“What do you mean?”

“Just what I said.”

Amid an awkward silence, a few more rounds of drinks were poured. As the grill became filled with more intestines than could be grilled, Jihyeok finally put down the tongs.

“It’s so obvious that it’s a lie; why bother trying to deceive.”

“…”

“If everything is a lie, it seems more impressive when you keep deceiving.”

Jihyeok looked at Yeoreum with a clenched fist.

Yeoreum, intentionally avoiding eye contact, nibbled at the intestines. She also brought the soju close to her lips.

A glass, almost untouched, remained on the table. Not only the intestines but also the way Yeoreum barely ate or drank was clearly observed by Jihyeok.

‘Test of character.’

Jihyeok closed his eyes for a moment and then spoke when he opened them again.

“When did you break up?”

As Yeoreum was about to drink from the cup, she froze along with the cup.

Not realizing that it was just a tossed phrase to see her reaction, Yeoreum’s eyes shook like a person caught in the act of stealing. She couldn’t bear to see Jihyeok’s expression stiffening more and more as she struggled to come up with an excuse.

“…No! No. It’s absolutely not like that.”

A belated excuse burst out haphazardly.

“It’s really not like that. We’re not like that. Don’t misunderstand. Why would you think that way?”

Holding out both hands, she spoke again.

“It’s ridiculous.”

Jihyeok just stared at her calmly without saying a word. His gaze made Yeoreum more uncomfortable.

What should she do?

She promised herself not to say anything.

‘What excuse should I make?’

Knowing that she wasn’t skilled at lying, she decided to break through with a direct approach.

She felt that a certain level of truth needed to be mixed in to convey sincerity. After finishing her thoughts, Yeoreum looked up, meeting Jihyeok’s eyes.

“It’s not like that, Jihyeok.”

“Then what is it?”

“Well, I liked him. Unilaterally. It had nothing to do with him.”

She revealed a half-truth as if it were the whole truth. Jihyeok’s face noticeably contorted.

“I fell for him at first sight and kept asking to meet. He had no interest in me.”

“…”

“We didn’t contact each other for a few years, but we met again because of work. Maybe he found me bothersome like I used to be. So, it was a bit awkward.”

“…”

“But it won’t be like that anymore. I’ll dislike him more, and…”

As she spoke, it started to sound like the real truth. Considering only Yeoreum’s feelings, apart from Taeseok’s perspective, it seemed that way. These were the words she spilled out, almost like her first sincere confession after they met again.

As if to strengthen those words, tears welled up in Yeoreum’s eyes. The complex emotions he showed after they reunited suddenly surfaced.

“I just liked him alone, so please don’t misunderstand him.”

A teardrop fell into the glass.
Jihyeok downed the alcohol as if the Earth had collapsed, wearing an expression as if the world had ended.

The intestines, starting from the edges, began to burn, spreading the pungent scent of charcoal. Yeoreum quickly pulled out the untouched intestines, stealing tears.

“Here. I got it. Wipe your tears.”

After a few struggles, the tongs moved into Jihyeok’s hand. He handed a tissue to Yeoreum.

“It’s spicy, that’s why.”

Yeoreum made an excuse that wouldn’t be convincing.

“Well, how much did you like him? That guy.”

Grasping the completely burned intestines nervously, Jihyeok spoke. Treating the intestines like a trash can, he disposed of them.

Jihyeok was from the same agency as Seotaeseok. When they were filming the drama “My Cold Youth,” Taeseok was in his mid-twenties, an age when he could adequately act as a high school student. Nevertheless, Jihyeok was intentionally recommended by Seotaeseok, leading to the casting being settled.

As a result, he lived for a while with the label “Post-Seotaeseok.”

At first, Jihyeok was happy because he liked Taeseok. However, living a life of constant comparison became increasingly burdensome.

Moreover, Jihyeok couldn’t handle everything as well as Taeseok did. Ultimately, he solidified the image of perennial second place.

With a sense of inferiority settling in his stomach, the qualities he thought were Taeseok’s strengths now seemed like flaws. Confidence seemed like arrogance, and intelligence seemed like opportunism.

In every aspect, he wanted to surpass Taeseok. In reality, he felt a sense of satisfaction by naturally taking over Taeseok’s CF during his two-year hiatus.

‘How did I come this far?’

When Taeseok resumed his activities, he didn’t want to lose one by one. And among them, what he didn’t want to lose the most was right in front of him.

“What was so good about him?”

His voice came out hot unintentionally.
