The rain began to ease gradually from dawn.

Because Sinclair had refused to let her rest all night, Elaina had struggled desperately to stay awake, feeling almost guilty for falling asleep first.

But whether it was because she had been trapped in the carriage all day, or because she had finally faced this valley again…… Elaina felt overwhelming fatigue, and eventually, in the late dawn, she slipped into sleep alone.

And when she opened her eyes again, astonishingly, she saw Sinclair’s face looking down at her.

It didn’t take long to realize she had been lying with her head on Sinclair’s thigh. So Elaina involuntarily let out a foolish sound, and Sinclair chuckled with amused disbelief.

“You slept soundly for ages, and now you’re acting flustered like this?”

Then he teased her.

“Well, if you have any conscience at all, you should be reacting this way. Your thigh has been numb for hours already.”

It really did seem likely. Before she fell asleep, the sky had still been pitch black, but now the sun was high enough in the sky to be described as overhead.

“I’m, I’m sorry. I fell asleep without meaning to…”

“Since you’ve apologized, consider it settled. After all, I’m the one who laid you down, snoozing like a chicken. If we’re splitting responsibility, it’s fifty-fifty.”

Sinclair gave a light chuckle, then slowly opened the carriage door—and, completely unlike what he had just said, stepped out as if nothing were amiss.

Look at that. He can walk just fine.

“I’ll take a moment to check the valley’s condition. Wait here.”
