The group heading to the villa was small. It consisted only of Clayton, Dahlia, and the minimal escort necessary to guard the two of them.

Though she missed Samantha—having grown accustomed to a life where maids took care of everything for her—it wasn’t overly inconvenient, thanks to temporary attendants from the inns they stayed at along the way.

‘It’s not as hard as I thought it might be.’

She’d been worried about riding in a carriage for long periods, having never done so before, but frequent stops at villages along the route made it manageable.

Perhaps because it was a long journey, the carriage itself was also wider and more comfortable than previous ones.

Dahlia, who had been gazing out the window, turned her head slightly.

The man seated across from her sat perfectly composed, poring over documents.

Their silence was so complete it was almost embarrassing for a married couple—but though they spoke little, it wasn’t awkward.

It was a moment made comfortable by the fact they’d shared a room for several days. Moreover—

In the past, he wouldn’t have cared whether she was ill or not—but now, he worried and showed consideration, as if afraid she might be unwell.

He readily did things the old Clayton could never have imagined: stopping the carriage when sitting too long stiffened her body, suggesting a walk; or handing her water just as her throat grew dry.
