The Problematic Helper (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 11
“Jin Seo Hyun, did you put someone on my tail?”
“You couldn’t bring yourself to step into the Bando Hotel where my wife’s name is proudly displayed, so you picked the one right next to it instead? Do you even know who owns that hotel? I’m Jin Han’s daughter. Are you seriously going to claim you didn’t know the Asso Hotel belongs to our Jin Han Group?”
“Damn it! Half the hotels in Seoul are tied to either Jin Han or Bando—there’s no avoiding it. What am I supposed to do, check the ownership and shares every time before walking in?”
It was the height of brazenness.
“Every idol who’s even slightly popular at Eden Entertainment is just a sidekick to Seo Gi Hyuk. I don’t care about any of that. I don’t care what you get up to outside. But you go. But you should never have let me get that phone call saying my son-in-law was seen coming out of your hotel with some young girl!!”
“That damn son-in-law of yours! You don’t even give him anything, yet I’m the one who has to watch my behavior in your house!”
Crash!
The crystal vase Seo Hyun hurled shattered into pieces, leaving a fresh scratch across Gi Hyuk’s face.
With the hotel right in front of him about to slip away, a loveless marriage suddenly didn’t seem like such a big deal.
Not giving Ji Wan a single thing from Bando that would end up in his own hands—this was the final choice.
Even if it was a forced marriage, he now regretted not having carefully chosen a woman he could completely control to his own taste.
“It’s a summons to Anseo-dong, effective tomorrow. Chairwoman Jang is furious—don’t you dare blame my father for it.”
The fact that this has reached Anseo-dong means Chairman Jin of Jin Han E&C, Seo Hyun’s father, went straight to Chairwoman Jang and ratted you out.
Gi Hyuk’s eyebrows twisted viciously.
Bright red blood welled up over the fresh cut on his cheek.
“Tomorrow is the ovulation day the hospital told us about—my ovulation day. Don’t be late coming home.”
The woman who would do anything to get her hands on Bando had apparently also resolved to carry the first grandchild in her own womb.
She had already consulted famous shamans for an auspicious day to conceive a son and top doctors for the day she could get pregnant on the first try, so embracing a woman he felt nothing for was pure torment.
It was the same for Seo Hyun, and perhaps it was only natural that, despite nearly a year of dutiful efforts, no child had been conceived.
“Let’s stop that nonsense.”
Gi Hyuk irritably loosened and retied his tie while wiping the crimson blood from his wound.
“What if the Seo Ji Wan you’re dying to devour suddenly ends up pregnant?”
Seo Hyun’s voice was eerily calm as she spoke with her arms folded.
“A man who’ll marry some random woman he doesn’t even know the background of just because Chairwoman Jang says the word—what’s one baby from her belly to him?”
Seo Hyun turned away, enveloped in a rich rose scent.
“Remember this well. The first grandchild of Bando will definitely be born from me.”
She knew exactly which buttons to press to make the man who acted as though Bando were already his lose his temper.
Gi Hyuk’s already twisted mind grew even more complicated having to calculate even that.
*****
Do Um chattered nonstop.
From the wildflower buds blooming in the flowerbed to the stray cat she’d recently discovered in the backyard.
Whenever the next course arrived, she would praise the previous dish or fire off questions about the one just served.
“There was this devout Buddhist lady who worked at the cathedral cafeteria where I used to help. One day she came to confession looking dead serious.”
Do Um popped a small piece of steak into her mouth and chewed.
“I asked what it was about, and she said, ‘Every mealtime I only pretended to make the sign of the cross, but I actually gave thanks to Buddha.’”
Covering her little mouth, the woman burst into giggles.
“Then the nun who was listening said, ‘You should have asked God to pass the message on to Buddha while you were confessing. Sorry for cooking at the cathedral instead of the temple.’”
Watching that small chewing mouth and those gently smiling eyes meant more to Ji Wan than simply filling an empty stomach.
This was his first time having such a lively meal.
Especially a meal alone with someone who talked this much.
Yet strangely, it didn’t feel unpleasant or uncomfortable in the least—it was almost weirder that it didn’t.
“The temple-going lady replied, ‘Oh, I already asked Him to tell God for me during confession.’”
Even her awkward attempt at dialect and the way she playfully raised and lowered the corners of her eyes kept Ji Wan’s gaze lingering for a long time.
Every time she laughed, the corners of his own mouth lifted involuntarily, and his stomach felt full without eating much at all.
While Do Um was in the restroom.
The server who brought dessert glanced regretfully at her empty seat.
She had reacted enthusiastically to every dish, so he must have been secretly looking forward to it this time too.
“Madam is so adorable.”
The aroma of the freshly brewed coffee was wonderful.
“…Is she?”
Trending
“Yes, how can someone smile so childishly? You can tell she’s been loved abundantly. As a fellow woman, how could anyone not fall for someone like her?”
A vanilla ice cream topped with fresh strawberries was placed in front of the empty seat.
“This is a service from our chef. He asked me to pass on his thanks for the lovely compliment. Enjoy your time.”
Whether hotel or restaurant, everything provided to “Seo Ji Wan of Bando Construction” far exceeded even the special services offered to ordinary VIPs.
Having always received off-menu items and the very best service without thinking twice about it, the man couldn’t help but smirk at suddenly being told it was “service.”
“To think people say she looks abundantly loved.”
The conscience of a man who had never given her even a tiny bit of love—let alone “abundantly”—prickled unbearably.
“Wow! How did you know I love vanilla ice cream?”
The woman returning from the restroom apparently thought Ji Wan had ordered it for her.
“I didn’t.”
“Huh?”
Ji Wan casually tipped his chin. A big chef in a tall white hat was craned his neck to peek, then shyly nodded when Do Um looked his way.
Only then realizing it was the chef’s gift, Do Um smiled brightly.
“He said you’re the lovely one.”
It sounded almost solemn for words he was relaying so she wouldn’t mistake them for his own.
Whether or not, Do Um scooped a heaping spoonful of ice cream and held it out to Ji Wan.
“Ah—open up.”
With the server who’d said she looked abundantly loved watching with sparkling eyes from afar, and the burly chef eagerly awaiting her reaction to his dessert, there was no escaping it.
Refusing would feel like rejecting the nice compliment that she was a woman abundantly loved, so Ji Wan willingly accepted the spoonful.
Sweet.
So sweet it stung.
The man who didn’t even like sweets frowned, and Do Um laughed.
When she laughed, the server across the room laughed too, and even the big chef joined in.
It was a good night.
No—
It was more than good; it was a night he was genuinely happy to have.
*****
On the way back after dinner.
Do Um pressed her nose almost against the car window, staring in wonder at everything like a country girl who’d just arrived in the city.
“Anywhere you want to go?”
Since they were already out and he was in a pretty good mood, it was a rare generous offer.
Unlike the stiff formal speech and oppressive atmosphere of before, his much shorter way of speaking made the mood noticeably softer.
“Really anywhere?”
Her eyes sparkled as if she might ask for something outrageous.
Ji Wan gave a small nod.
Without hesitation, Do Um pointed.
“Then over there!”
It was a huge discount hypermarket with a bright yellow square sign and bold black letters.
“That one? You’re sure?”
“Yes, hurry!”
Even while he parked, Do Um bounced her feet impatiently.
Every time those little feet tapped the floor, Ji Wan felt his own chest thump in rhythm.
He couldn’t understand why she was so excited—like she used to be waiting in the garden—nor why she’d choose a place anyone could visit anytime as the destination for their date, but he grabbed the cart she handed him and hurriedly followed the woman scampering off.
The first thing the disappearing-and-reappearing Do Um shyly brought back was feminine hygiene products.
So Kyung bought groceries once a week and said she’d get anything needed, but asking a complete stranger to buy sanitary pads had apparently been too much.
He pretended not to look, acting uninterested, yet he was undeniably curious what the squirrel-like woman darting around would bring next like acorns.
After several rounds of vanishing and returning with a pair of cotton pajamas printed with cartoon characters and a small lamp,
“How about these?”
They were couple mugs—when placed together the characters’ heads formed a heart.
“Childish.”

As if she’d expected that reaction, Do Um nonchalantly dropped both mugs into the cart.
“They say dating is supposed to be childish. Consider these my wedding gift to you. I received one too, after all.”
She spread her small hand—not even half the size of his—and the silver ring on her ring finger glinted.
She probably had no idea that the tiny stone, which looked like cubic zirconia, was actually a 5-carat diamond worth the price of a small Seoul apartment.
Otherwise she wouldn’t be digging in the garden dirt with bare hands bearing a ring worth hundreds of millions, planting flowers, doing dishes, and even scrubbing blackened sneakers.
When Woo Seok had been shocked seeing her dig bare-handed the first time and rushed over, Ji Wan had stopped him, saying it was far better than her not wearing something so expensive openly.
Compared to previous women who lacked tact but could spot expensive jewelry from a mile away, she was much better, and since it was a marriage for show, it was only right to show what could be shown.
Walking side by side with the woman who had added the mugs, they entered the grocery section, and like a ritual Do Um stopped at every sample station.
Despite just having eaten a full course meal, she faithfully fed Ji Wan cookie pieces, dumplings, kiwi—everything pierced on disposable forks—in order.
“Stop.”
At the fifth fork Ji Wan turned his head.
“Oh my, the bride is so busy feeding her husband.”
“They must be newlyweds—feeding the husband first whenever something tastes good.”
“Hehe, accept it while she’s offering. Later she won’t give you any even if you beg, hehe.”
It was near closing time,
and with hardly any customers left, Do Um’s affectionate act of filling her husband’s mouth before her own looked utterly charming to the sampling ladies.
“What a perfect couple—so well-matched! You can tell they’ll live happily.”
Hearing the comments coming from all sides, Do Um blushed.
“For a cozy drink together as a couple, nothing beats this cheese.”
At that single remark,
“I’ll take that cheese, please.”
She even looked happy adding cheese that hadn’t been on the shopping plan.
By this point it wouldn’t be wrong to say they hadn’t come to shop but simply to enjoy playing the role of a sweet newlywed couple.
