Understanding that the “something to confirm” Cryer mentioned referred to the presence or absence of the Mark, Olivia sighed once more and nodded.

“We’ll need your consent first.”

To literally “confirm” whether the child bore the Mark would inevitably require undressing them.

Abandoning her train of thought, Olivia waved her hand toward Cryer, who had abruptly started unbuttoning his shirt.

But before Olivia could even finish her sentence, Cryer had already exposed the Mark, a hideous blotch spreading across his collarbone—and Sugar’s eyes, previously unfocused despite being open, instantly sharpened.

Olivia fixed Sugar with an intentionally cold voice and an even colder gaze, prompting the child—who had been staring blankly at Cryer—to slowly turn their eyes toward her.
