“If having red hair and blue eyes together has become your family’s trademark, then you’d know how it works, wouldn’t you?”

“So if we get married and have a child, it’ll definitely have red hair and blue eyes?”

“So far, that’s been the case. Since heirs were so scarce, each generation usually only had one or two children, so there was never any confusion. My family seems to possess extremely strong self-assertion, yet apparently lacks the stamina to manifest it in multiple ways.”

Olivia, having rather harshly assessed her own ancestors, released his cheek and sank deeply into the sofa.

She had been so startled by Isaac’s question about having children that her shoulders stiffened completely, making the spot where her neck met her skull throb painfully.

Distracted by the sudden wave of pain, Olivia swallowed a groan and missed Cryer’s quietly muttered words.

“Yes. So it is—our child would have red hair and blue eyes.”

She fidgeted, trying desperately to ease the pain, but as always, a little wriggling wouldn’t make the ache disappear.

Watching Olivia squirm like a salted earthworm, Cryer finally spoke.

“What hurts?”

“The parts that hurt are those that sit.”

When Cryer’s eyes pressed for a more specific answer to her vague reply, Olivia sighed deeply and pressed firmly around her neck.

“Sitting all the time weakens my lower back until my spine curves, which pulls my shoulders inward… ah, never mind. The pain just shoots straight up from my shoulders to the back of my neck—I feel like yanking my head right off.”

Bolshayk’s ancestors, who’d spent lifetimes buried under mountains of documents, must have lived with the same pain as their constant companion.

“One of my ancestors called it ‘turtle neck’—that phrase fits perfectly.”
