“Can you see ahead?”

“Here, Sugar, take this.”

Isaac and Ambre had appeared at some point, standing on either side of the child.

Isaac effortlessly took the dry towel Sugar had been holding and transferred it to his own hand, while Ambre placed into Sugar’s now-empty arms a basket filled with herbs—bulky in appearance but light in weight.

“It wasn’t heavy at all.”

Sugar, her cheeks flushed red, protested while ignoring the lingering pain of the fading brand.

Their amused replies came back instantly.

“Yes, yes. Not heavy at all.”

“Just put that down and eat this.”

Though Sugar hadn’t even taken the hard candy Ambre slipped into her pocket, her mouth was already sweet, and she strode forward with renewed vigor.

The brand on Sugar’s side grew fainter with each passing day.

The sun was sinking low on the horizon.

In the heart of the Imperial Princess’s palace, the study remained brightly lit, while servants chatted amongst themselves, wrapping up the day with stories of what had happened.

But the chair where Olivia should have been, buried under a mountain of documents on a desk she could barely see, stood empty.
