Cryer finally met Greta’s eyes.

Greta shivered alone before his crimson irises—glassy and utterly devoid of emotion, even as they held her reflection.

Though her cheeks flushed red and her cheekbones lifted with unrestrained joy, Cryer still felt nothing at all.

Not even the aversion he’d felt toward that something he’d encountered when dragged away from the altar, nor the satisfaction when Olivia had struck it down with such force.

Precisely because of that, Greta was certain Cryer hadn’t changed.

If, by some remote chance, he had defied the will of the god or betrayed her, she believed at least a fragment of emotion would have appeared in those eyes.

Since her earliest memories, Greta had been raised by her father, the Goatee Mage, listening endlessly to his sermons on “the worthlessness of humans,” “the harm humans cause,” and “why humans must be purged.”

Though she had always separated herself from “humans,” she was merely refusing to acknowledge the truth—that even after obtaining divine power, she remained human.

And the fact that Greta, merely an individual, held absolutely no meaning to Cryer.

Cryer’s tightly closed lips finally parted.

“That endeavor failed.”

Though he was merely stating a fact, it sounded like a proclamation.

In truth, everything Cryer said to Greta had always been indistinguishable from a proclamation.

If he wished to act, he acted. If he desired something, he acted. If he spoke, it was done.

Greta differed from Bonita, who had once superficially worshipped the ancient god and later, after enduring unimaginable suffering, decided to burn the world; and from Tyson, who found no meaning in life and believed others, like himself, must be cleansed.
