The Price is Everything of Yours (76 Chapters Left to Complete) - Chapter 249
Once again, news of defeat reached the palace, casting a deep gloom over the imperial court.
Abelus found it strange. The imperial house was mightier than any other royal family on the continent, and the Maindlant barbarians were nothing more than a ragged horde living among themselves.
In both financial strength and legitimacy, the two sides were incomparable—so he had assumed a surprise attack would easily crush them.
Thus, he had expected this to finally deliver a decisive blow to the Grand Duke who had tormented him his entire life as Crown Prince and to firmly establish his own authority before the nobility.
Yet why did they keep losing? Even Marquis Rikeandros, the most capable among the nobles, was now gone. And Megara’s whispered schemes had grown tiresome from hearing them too often….
“Could there be a traitor?”
Abelus seriously suspected as much—not merely the usual informants that great nobles routinely planted for intelligence gathering, but an actual high-ranking insider who had colluded with the enemy.
This suspicion wasn’t based solely on the string of defeats. The Maindlant army was positioned roughly one-third along the straight line stretching from the far northern edge of the empire all the way to the capital, Pelena.
Naturally, they had passed by several of the secret imperial strongholds the Emperor had long concealed along that route.
Knowing they could trust no noble, past Emperors had identified a few natural fortresses—places so defensible that any rebellion could be held back to some degree. Only direct imperial heirs, and usually only the reigning Emperor and Empress or the Crown Prince and his consort, knew their locations. Any enemy force stepping near them would inevitably suffer heavy losses.
Yet the Maindlant army had neatly skirted those secret bases as if mocking them. While it might be coincidence the first time or two, even deliberate feints afterward failed to lure them in. Clearly, they acted as though they knew exactly where the imperial strongholds were.
Someone knocked at the door of the study where Abelus sat alone. Indifferently, he called out,
“Come in.”
The Crown Prince’s steward cracked the door open and hurried inside, holding a small booklet in his hand.
“So it’s finally arrived.”

She came to see him, bringing breakfast.
As she put down the breakfast and was about to leave, his hand slipped while holding the spoon. “Clank!”
She turned around upon hearing the noise.
He looked up at her, his eyebrows drooping: “My hand… has no strength.”
“Shall I… feed you?” she asked tentatively.
He opened his mouth cheerfully: “Ah—”
Thinking she was drowning, he jumped in without hesitation to save her, but nearly drowned himself. In the end, it was she who swam over to rescue him, giving him air underwater.
After emerging from the water, his ear tips turned red. He lightly brushed his cheek, tucking his sideburns behind his ear, revealing delicate, pink-tinged ear tips. He lowered his gaze, too embarrassed to look at her.
Xin Jiao Zhou: He’s truly beautiful, kind-hearted, and adorable.
