Cledwin kindly watched as Nole looked around with a bewildered expression. Then, in a flat voice, he asked,

“My wife isn’t here, is she?”

Nole was usually good at lying, but right now he was genuinely flustered. He waved his hands.

“Oh, no! Heath! You should be here! Heath! But, uh, I guess my companions took you somewhere else—Heath! They must’ve seen me with you and got scared—Heath!”

“Nice try. Goodbye.”

His sword flashed like a crescent moon. Nole collapsed, spitting blood.

It was clear why Nole had brought him here. The place received almost no light from the lamps, tucked away in a grimy, secluded corner. This was likely the lair of Nole’s group—or at least the faction that had led him here.

Yet no other Noles were in sight. Not even a trace of them remained.

If Neris had truly come this way, there would have been pins along the path leading here. But since there were none, she certainly hadn’t been dragged to this exact spot.

Cledwin gazed blankly around. He was both relieved and furious.

It would have been better if Neris had actually been captured by these creatures called “Nole.” They seemed intelligent and oddly capable of understanding human speech—he doubted they’d kill an intruder outright.

But if she’d encountered truly foolish beasts in this madness-infested place swarming with monsters—like orcs or that stone golem from earlier…
