“Reese, why is Heather acting like that?”

Diane asked while sipping hot chocolate in the reception room.

Due to the insistence of the McKinnon Count and Countess that her pale face was undoubtedly from the cold, Diane and Neris had briefly stayed indoors. Neris grinned as she spoke.

“He’s making fun of both of us. He pretended to be a bad person to chase me away. He thinks no one would believe us even if we defended each other.”

“What!”

Diane rubbed her arms, goosebumps rising just like before. Heather had often made her feel bad since they were young, but never so overtly—

‘Well, what should I say?’

There were no lies in what Heather had said. At least, he hadn’t fabricated anything.

As Diane pondered for the right words, Neris sipped her hot chocolate and clarified.

“He tends to subtly distort what others say. Just make it so he can’t say anything at all.”

Exactly, that’s it. When Neris pinpointed the uneasiness she had long felt about Heather, Diane nodded in relief. But she still had concerns.

“What if he doesn’t stay quiet? What if he exaggerates and spreads weird rumors?”

“Diane, has Heather ever done something like that to you?”

Neris looked at Diane earnestly. Diane fiddled with the horn-shaped cup in her hands and nodded.

“…Yes.”

“Is it the horse figurine incident Betty mentioned?”

Diane’s ears turned slightly red.

“…Yes.”

Neris patiently looked into Diane’s eyes and encouraged her to continue.

“Tell me in detail. I’m curious.”

“It happened last year.”

Diane began recounting the story, piecing together her memories.

It was around this time last year. Diane had received a beautiful wooden horse as a gift. Though aged, it wasn’t a toy for riding but a delicate item for room decor, adorned with jewels on its eyes and bridle, and painted in sugary colors that made everyone envious.

Two days after receiving the horse, while a party was still underway and many guests were present, the horse was found broken. Diane was devastated and sought the person responsible.

The list of suspects quickly narrowed down to three—Heather, Muriel, and a maid working in the mansion.

Heather and Muriel had almost simultaneously entered and left the room where the gifts were stacked, and the maid was the last person who found the broken horse.

Since Heather and Muriel vouched for each other, the blame fell on the maid. Countess McKinnon, who was not one to hastily judge, had no other suspects to consider.

Ultimately, the maid was dismissed without a reference, despite having worked there for three years.

Diane was not convinced. The dismissed maid had been honest in her work, and if she had broken the horse, she could have easily confessed.

Also, it seemed as if Heather had stopped the maid from saying something to Diane.

Yet, nobody believed Diane’s claims, and before she knew it, the adults had begun to say that Diane was jealous of Heather.

Angelo Railing was extremely indignant, and the adults of the McKinnon family continuously explained why Heather couldn’t be suspected. Heather had a witness and was an innocent and good child who would have confessed if he had done it.

Even good kids can lie to adults. From Diane’s perspective, knowing that she herself was a child, it was a biased assumption. However, Muriel vehemently cornered her.

“So, you’re saying I’m lying to protect Heather? You’re doubting me? Huh?”
Diane was confused. Certainly, even if Heather were the culprit, why would Muriel take Heather’s side? Muriel was family.

Continuing to assert the maid’s innocence seemed foolish and indicative of a lack of trust in family. Diane was just an eleven-year-old girl and eventually began to doubt herself.

Around that time, Muriel once again cornered Diane in front of others, and then Heather spoke kindly.

“The young lady is still young and kind, easily deceived by a wicked servant who pretends to be good.”

Others, even Betty, praised Heather’s kindness and maturity. However, having seen Heather look down upon her right in front of her, Diane was certain.

Heather did not say those words with good intentions.

Yes, the culprit who broke the necklace could possibly be that maid. However, Heather emphasized the words “young” and “kind,” and looked at Diane with a strange gaze.

Ever since Heather started frequenting the MacKinnon house, she occasionally revealed that gaze only to Diane. The young Diane finally realized what that unfamiliar look meant.

Contempt.

Diane immediately turned it around and claimed Heather had disregarded her.

There probably was a more accurate and better expression, but Diane at that time had limited vocabulary. Lord and Lady MacKinnon thought their daughter was acting based on her own likes and dislikes, as always.

To them, it must have seemed like their daughter was forcing Heather, who had shown unbelievably calm responses for her young age.

“…Muriel is friendly with me, and Uncle Sivna and her father work together. So, continuing to frequent here can’t be helped. Mom and Dad even gave Heather a gift, saying I was sorry for insisting.”
