Seeing Ruela speak in such a calm voice, as if discussing everyday life, it really did seem things would turn out just as she said.

“Is there anything I can help with? I heard from my husband earlier that monsters are roaming all over the capital. If it weren’t for Miss Romnin, we wouldn’t have been able to escape—we’d have been dragged before Duke Kuran and executed. So I truly wish to repay this kindness.”

When Balder and Maria had Lesser Monsters around them, I’d assumed—though I doubted it at first—that they were merely guarding the area.

“Yes. That’s why I hesitated earlier and couldn’t enter the mansion of Maria Kuran. I saw the building collapse and thought there might be a monster inside.”

“You knew that and still bravely came out to join us.”

“My husband said Lesser Monsters move slower than one might expect. He claimed they couldn’t catch up if we fled on horseback. I came out trusting only his words—after all, staying inside the mansion offered no real solution.”

Ruela couldn’t help but admire Countess Rhine’s courage.

If their positions were reversed, could she herself have stepped out onto those dangerous streets relying solely on someone else’s word?

Ruela stared at Countess Rhine with newfound respect and asked,

“You asked if there was anything you could help with?”

“Yes. Since you’ve saved us, I’d like to do something—anything—to help in return.”
