“Wow, the coffee machine arrived.”
Ji Hye let out an exclamation while watching the delivery man drag in a huge box.
“Huh……?”
They clearly said it would take about three weeks, but it came this fast?
A sense of doubt arose, but she quickly brushed it aside. The excitement of being able to drink delicious coffee starting today welled up inside her.
“See you in the break room later.”
Ji Hye winked one eye and quickly disappeared back to her seat.
“Let’s have the meeting in ten minutes.”
At Do Jin’s voice, the sound of keyboards in the office suddenly grew faster. Ji Na was the same. Not wanting to give him any opening, she reviewed the materials for the meeting.
“Associate Lee Ji Na.”
Despite all the effort she had put in—several times more than usual—Do Jin’s sharp voice poured down on Ji Na. Sitting at the head of the table, Do Jin opened the documents with a stiff expression.
“As I said last time, it feels like the data research is insufficient. Have you been really busy lately?”
A chilling criticism shot out of his mouth. At his attitude, which was different from usual, the surrounding employees glanced at Ji Na.
“No, sir.”
When Ji Na raised her head, her eyes met Do Jin’s.
“No? From what I see, it looks like you’re busy because your mind is somewhere else. A handsome intern joined, so coming to work must feel exciting and wonderful, right?”
At Do Jin’s sarcasm, Ji Na bit her lip hard.
You petty bastard.
“No, sir.”
Ji Na had no choice but to repeat the same words like a parrot. She couldn’t understand what part of the materials was lacking. It simply felt like he was taking revenge on her out of personal feelings.
“You, of all people, know better than anyone that we can’t write the proposal if the data isn’t complete, yet you seem to have gotten lazy lately—that’s why I’m saying this.”
The corners of Do Jin’s thin lips curled upward. To anyone watching, he clearly looked like he was enjoying the situation.
“I’m sorry. I’ll correct it.”
“Fix it by the end of today.”
As if he’d been waiting for it, Do Jin replied.
“Manager, we have the collaboration meeting with the development team next week, so I don’t think it’s necessary to finish it today.”
Associate Yoo, sitting next to Ji Na, cautiously suggested.
“It has to be today.”
Do Jin emphasized once more with an expressionless face.
“I’m asking because I’m worried Associate Lee might make another mistake. The longer the data research is delayed, the more our team suffers.”
On the surface, he spoke as if it were for the team, but Ji Na could clearly see through Do Jin’s true intentions.
“Understood.”
However, she couldn’t dare argue or question him here. Ji Na bit her lip and answered politely.
“Good. Then let’s move on to the next part.”
Do Jin nodded, seemingly satisfied with Ji Na’s obedient attitude, and casually turned the page. Only now did Ji Na realize just how pathetic and petty an ex-boyfriend turned boss could be when tormenting someone.
Childish jerk.
For a brief moment, she even considered quitting this damn company right away, but she didn’t want to give up her career because of that bastard. Ji Na steeled herself once more. Just endure.
After the meeting ended and she returned to her seat, Associate Yoo, her senior, spoke with a sympathetic face.
“The manager was unusually strict today. He’s not normally like that.”
He’s always been pathetic.
Ji Na answered inwardly and forced an awkward smile.
“Right?”
“Looks like we’ll be working overtime starting Monday. Hang in there.”
“Thank you.”
Associate Yoo looked at Ji Na with concern before returning to his seat.
Ji Na sat down, glared at her monitor, and reignited her fighting spirit. Fine, let’s see who wins. She cracked her knuckles as if warming up.
She planned to finish work on time without overtime by giving her maximum focus. But before she could even concentrate, Do Jin kept calling her as if he had decided to make it his mission.
“Associate Lee Ji Na.”
“Yes.”
“Associate Lee.”
“Yes…….”
“Associate Lee Ji Na!”
“……Yes.”
“Ji—”
“Coming!”
Because he kept calling her for pointless things, the entire morning flew by meaninglessly.
“I won’t let you get away with this…….”
Staring at the screen with no progress, Ji Na gritted her teeth. She was starting to feel dizzy.
Do Jin was gathering documents, preparing to go out for an external meeting. At least that was a relief. Ji Na realized she hadn’t even gone to the bathroom all morning because she’d been summoned constantly.
The fact that she had even held in her bodily needs while being called around made anger surge again. Washing her hands under the running faucet, Ji Na barely suppressed her rage. If she could just hit Kim Do Jin’s head once, she felt like she could sell her soul for it.
At that moment, the bathroom door burst open with urgent footsteps. The face she least wanted to see—Heo Yoon Joo. Covering her mouth, she hurried into a stall with an unusual expression. Soon after, the sound of retching followed.
Did she drink too much because it was the weekend? Tsk. Trying not to care, Ji Na turned off the faucet and pulled out a tissue with a tap. Running into her would only make her mood twice as bad. But despite her efforts, Heo Yoon Joo appeared anyway.
“Hello, Associate.”
She couldn’t ignore Yoon Joo, who greeted her while wiping her pale mouth.
“Looks like you ate something bad.”
A roundabout way of saying “Looks like you drank too much,” Ji Na said while throwing the wet tissue into the trash.
“Ah, you wouldn’t know, Associate.”
Yoon Joo smirked and shook her head.
“Morning sickness is really tough, you know.”
Only then did Ji Na recall what Yoon Joo had said at the restaurant a while ago about being pregnant. Ji Na nodded awkwardly.
“That sounds rough.”
She barely stopped herself from asking if it was Do Jin’s baby. It would have been like sprinkling salt on a fresh wound. It already stung enough. Why reopen the injury?
Ji Na decided it was none of her business anymore and tried to cut off her interest, but then—
“You and the manager are completely over now, right?”
In the mirror, Yoon Joo was giving Ji Na a subtle smile. It looked exactly like the face of a winner who had just claimed victory.
Ji Na let out a hollow laugh, dumbfounded. Yoon Joo’s childish inner thoughts were written all over her face and actions.
“Yes.”
She stared straight at Yoon Joo with emotionless eyes.
“We’re completely over.”

At Ji Na’s seemingly relieved expression, Yoon Joo looked slightly flustered. Seeing that face made a corner of Ji Na’s heart feel satisfied.
As she left the bathroom, Do Jin was standing there. For some reason, he looked anxious. Spotting Ji Na, he frowned, but as soon as he saw Yoon Joo, he spoke.
“Are you okay?”
The worry in his voice almost made her laugh out loud. Had he ever used that tone with her when they were dating?
“Manager, I’m sorry for making you worry.”
“How can you help it if you’re not feeling well?”
Watching Do Jin fidget nervously, Ji Na quickly walked past. Seeing them act like that at the office, it seemed they had no intention of keeping it secret.
“Can you still go on the external visit?”
“Of course. I have to go since I’m going with you, Manager.”
Even though she felt nothing for Do Jin anymore, watching the two of them wasn’t easy. It felt disgusting, like she had been dumped for someone new while still in the relationship.
“Wow, are those two dating?”
Ji Na jumped at Ji Hye’s sly voice that came out of nowhere.
“Huh?”
“The vibe between them is no joke.”
As Ji Hye watched them suspiciously, Ji Na unnecessarily turned her head away.
“Whatever, let them do what they want.”
“I heard rumors about Heo Yoon Joo, you know.”
“What rumors?”
“I have a friend in HR. She said there was something going on.”
“Wasn’t it that she’s the president’s daughter? Or niece? Something like that?”
It was a rumor that circulated when Heo Yoon Joo first joined. Caused by her overly flashy clothes and bags. No one ever asked directly, but everyone vaguely guessed.
“But her last name is different from the chairman’s.”
“So people said maybe she’s an illegitimate child or something.”
“Ugh.”
Ji Na wrinkled her nose.
“Let’s go get coffee.”
Ji Hye remembered their original purpose.
“The new coffee machine is really awesome.”
Only then did Ji Na recall the new coffee machine that arrived this morning. Entering the break room, Ji Na and Ji Hye savored the coffee brewed by the new machine.
“The aroma is different, right?”
“Yeah, it’s completely different from the old model. It suddenly got such a huge upgrade.”
Ji Na eyed the coffee machine suspiciously.
“Well, it’s nice.”
Ji Hye shook her head as if it didn’t matter.
“This is what welfare is! Intern Seo and the new coffee machine. Perfect. Nice!”
Ji Hye’s exaggeration made Ji Na laugh.
“Ahem.”
Ji Na and Ji Hye jumped, not realizing when the break room door had opened. Jin Woo was standing at the entrance. Perhaps having heard Ji Hye, he gave a small awkward cough. Ji Hye, flustered, gulped down her coffee.
“Ah, hot!”
“Oh no, are you okay?”
“Y-yeah, of course. Totally. I just remembered something, so I’ll go first.”
Ji Hye scurried out of the break room. Holding back laughter, Ji Na looked at Jin Woo.
“Coffee?”
Ji Na casually lifted a paper cup, and Jin Woo smiled. Even that looked dazzlingly handsome.
“I didn’t come for coffee.”
Only then did Ji Na notice the documents in Jin Woo’s hand.
“Huh? What’s that?”
“I gathered a bit more data from earlier.”
He must have organized it separately after seeing her get scolded in the meeting room.
“Ah.”
Ji Na let out a small sound.
“Why did you do that when I didn’t even ask?”
She felt flustered. She realized once again that she had shown him another embarrassing side of herself. She remembered how, throughout the meeting, she had been more conscious of Jin Woo’s gaze than the humiliation from Do Jin.
Embarrassment came before gratitude. The version of herself she kept showing him felt too pathetic.
“I’m sorry. I acted on my own.”
At Ji Na’s reaction, Jin Woo cautiously apologized. Anyone would find the situation ridiculous—an associate getting angry at an intern who did good work without being asked.
“I figured you were busy, so you didn’t assign it, but I put something together roughly.”
At Jin Woo’s considerate voice, Ji Na lightly touched her forehead. The one acting on her own was actually herself.
“Sigh……. Fine. Thank you.”
She needed to get her act together now.
“I should have looked after you, but I was out of it today. Sorry.”
All sorts of emotions tangled up inside her.
“Don’t apologize.”
His low, gentle voice burrowed into Ji Na’s ears. Her lowered gaze lifted toward him.
Jin Woo’s eyes, fixed on her, had sunk deeply. His unusually dark pupils somehow looked angry.
“You didn’t do anything wrong, noona.”
