Jae Ho pressed the call button and answered the phone in a subdued voice. He didn’t need to check who was calling—the ominous premonition was already waving at him.

Jae Ho hung up and turned toward the bedroom. He felt uneasy about leaving without a word, but he figured he’d be back before she woke up. Grabbing his car keys, he walked quickly toward the garage.

“What’s Yuli doing right now?”
As soon as Jae Ho entered the car, Assemblyman Chae turned his head from gazing out the window.
“She’s asleep.”
“I see. She must’ve been quite shaken today…”
Assemblyman Chae let out a bitter smile, removed his glasses, and pressed his fingers firmly against the bridge of his nose. His voice sounded slightly hoarse, as if from fatigue.
“Before we get to the main point, let me ask you just one thing first. Your father—Je Woong—is his condition really that bad?”
At the blunt question, a slight twitch appeared at the corner of Jae Ho’s eye. Assemblyman Chae closed his eyes and placed a hand on his forehead.
