The moment Adrian stepped into the bedroom through the secret passage Lutis had told him about, he leapt up from the chaise and cried out.

He must have been waiting here in their bedroom instead of staying in his own room.

Aeli patted the back of the child rushing into her arms and said gently,

“Adi, Adi. Shh. It’s late now, so let’s keep our voices down a little, all right? What if someone hears and gets startled?”

In truth, she wasn’t worried about startling anyone—she feared someone might catch them entering through the hidden passage.

Adrian stared silently at Aeli as she placed her index finger against her lips, then mimicked her by pressing his own finger to his mouth and nodding.

“Got it. Shhh.”

“Good boy. Oh—look at you! You’ve already bathed and changed clothes?”

“Hmm… I was gonna wait till Mommy came, but Appa said I couldn’t have a snack unless I washed first….”

She could easily imagine how it had gone.

Half annoyed and half drowsy, the boy probably refused to bathe, worried Aeli might come and leave again while he was in the tub.
