River, the victim himself, leaned comfortably back in his chair without taking his eyes off the documents and asked Caleb,

“Are you really willing to accept any punishment?”

Caleb replied with his head bowed to the floor.

“Yes, I am.”

Brody hastily interrupted.

“Chief of Staff…”

River cut her off.

“My lady, you seem unusually concerned about this woman. I suppose there’s abundant camaraderie among people from the Empire.”

He sneered, still not looking up from the documents. The way he raised an eyebrow into an upside-down V and scratched his forehead looked particularly vexing.

‘Ugh, that bastard.’

But Brody suppressed her emotions and responded calmly. After all, she had to save Caleb somehow. Her voice came out soft.

“Before Caleb was from the Empire, she was from the North—and before that, she was a woman and a human being. Can’t you make your decision with that in mind?”

“Even taking that into account, a crime is still a crime, and punishment is still punishment.”

Brody’s expression hardened. River’s decision seemed far too resolute. She stepped firmly between River and Caleb and declared,

“But it wasn’t an intentional crime!”
