Although he had ultimately rescued her, Brody shivered with dread at the thought that she might have lost him forever.

“That was truly insane. It’s a miracle you’re even alive.”

“But a miracle did happen, didn’t it? You’re the one who saved me.”

“Me?”

“Yes. If you hadn’t found Cloria’s memoir, and if Kalihiel hadn’t sensed Cloria’s presence because of it, he wouldn’t have flown to the imperial palace, and I wouldn’t have met up with him.”

That was technically true—but Brody still felt uneasy. Upon reflection, it seemed Aidan had deliberately diverted the conversation.

“In any case, please don’t act so recklessly again.”
