The next morning.

Finally, a long-awaited ray of sunlight seeped through the top of the tower.

Brody gazed at that sunlight with hollow eyes.

Tears once again gathered at her dry, cracked eyelids.

She packed her belongings—though there was hardly anything worth calling luggage—only the torch she desperately needed now and the book that kept her sanity intact.

She bloomed plants to wrap the book around her body and held the torch in one hand.

Then, she estimated the direction from which the sunlight came and chose a spot to begin climbing.

Fortunately, as morning brightened, the spider had already vanished somewhere.

Brody cautiously stepped past the desiccated insect carcasses and scattered bones, then bloomed a vine plant at a suitably high point and let it hang down. After that, she bloomed branches on the wall to step onto, climbed up, and firmly tied the hanging vine around her body.

What followed was a repetitive cycle.

She stepped again and again on the branches she bloomed, climbing like a ladder until she reached where the vines had grown, then estimated another sufficiently high spot, bloomed more vines, let them hang, and tied herself securely. Then once more, she bloomed branches, stepped, and stepped again….

Perhaps half a day had passed in this manner.

Brody’s legs began to shake—or rather, they had long been trembling. It was simply now that she had reached the point where she couldn’t go on without rest.

Her breath caught in her throat, and her lungs ached. Her heart thudded as if pounding against her whole body.

Though she relied on the vines, beneath her lay only a sheer cliff—the height she had climbed.
