“Why are the wolves howling like that?”
The answer came not from Ian but from an unexpected person.
“Maybe Calihiel is awakening?”
Even though the night had deepened into the early morning, the tension had not dropped. Teddy spoke in a cheerful voice.
“Calihiel? What is that…?”
Brody looked up and stared at the flag fluttering in the middle of the camp.
“Yes, exactly. That one.”
Teddy then pointed to a corner of the bonfire with a pleased look.
It was a gesture asking if they could sit.
Ian remained silent with a stern face—perhaps disapproving?—but Brody gestured for him to go ahead.
Teddy took a seat joyfully. In his hand was a small, wooden-colored instrument.
Brody asked,
“I know the animal engraved on that flag… What does it mean if Calihiel awakens?”
“I brought this lute to explain! Everyone seems to be restless, so I thought maybe we could play a tune together.”
“Teddy, you can play an instrument?”
“Sort of. I can mimic a bit.”
As Teddy took his seat, sounds of movement came from other tents as well.
Some, unable to contain their curiosity or boredom, started to gather around the bonfire where the duke was, cautiously glancing.
With a gleam in his eyes, Teddy started to explain as the audience grew.
“Calihiel symbolizes an ice spirit. Ah, you know what an ice spirit is, right? It’s the father spirit of our northern region and the guardian of the Mason family, Hieldieta.”
“Ah, yes.”
Brody sneaked a glance at Ian as she responded.
Of course. She knew that the person behind her wielded the power of the ice spirit.
She was familiar with it as a tale from novels.
Still, she couldn’t openly say so. Brody responded briefly and waited for Teddy’s explanation.
“Calihiel has the face of a wolf, the body of a black leopard, the wings of an eagle, and the tail of a snake.”
